Zaid Jilani wants to know what AOC would do about a violent, mentally ill person who refused help

To be clear, we’re not trying to justify what happened to Jordan Neely on the New York subway. For one, we don’t know what happened: Some say he was held in a chokehold for 15 minutes, others for 3. Witnesses say the Marine veteran was trying to keep Neely contained until the police arrived to take care of the situation, which would mean that he had no intention of killing Neely. We’re pushing back, though, against people like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who’ve already declared the Marine a murderer from three minutes of video.

As we’ve reported, AOC says it’s “disgusting” that he hasn’t been charged yet, and she laid out a whole diatribe against the city she’s supposed to represent in Congress:

Neely was houseless and crying for food while the city is raising rents and cutting social services to militarize the police department. He was also reportedly out on a felony arrest warrant. He shouldn’t have been houseless … he should have been locked up, either in jail or a psych ward. But that’s what you get when you pay to ride the subway in New York.

Zaid Jilani, who is the “solutions reporter” for NewsNation, is looking for solutions from AOC:

The police can’t intervene because that’s criminalizing mental illness.

Jilani’s getting hit was a lot of, “Not murder him, probably” in the replies. But we think Jilani asks a lot of good questions: even staunch conservatives believe the government has some duties, such as to keep the citizens safe. If that involves more intervention with people like Jordan Neely, then cities need to step up and get to work. And you can’t just say, if Neely wasn’t “houseless” this never would have happened. Blue cities have a lot of work to do, and it’s not setting up campsites and handing out needles and “safe-smoking kits.”
