To be clear, we’re not trying to justify what happened to Jordan Neely on the New York subway. For one, we don’t know what happened: Some say he was held in a chokehold for 15 minutes, others for 3. Witnesses say the Marine veteran was trying to keep Neely contained until the police arrived to take care of the situation, which would mean that he had no intention of killing Neely. We’re pushing back, though, against people like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who’ve already declared the Marine a murderer from three minutes of video.
As we’ve reported, AOC says it’s “disgusting” that he hasn’t been charged yet, and she laid out a whole diatribe against the city she’s supposed to represent in Congress:
Jordan Neely was murdered.
But bc Jordan was houseless and crying for food in a time when the city is raising rents and stripping services to militarize itself while many in power demonize the poor, the murderer gets protected w/ passive headlines + no charges.
It’s disgusting. https://t.co/YJeQp9bbgE

Neely was houseless and crying for food while the city is raising rents and cutting social services to militarize the police department. He was also reportedly out on a felony arrest warrant. He shouldn’t have been houseless … he should have been locked up, either in jail or a psych ward. But that’s what you get when you pay to ride the subway in New York.
Zaid Jilani, who is the “solutions reporter” for NewsNation, is looking for solutions from AOC:
What would Ocasio-Cortez as a presiding official do in the situation of a disturbed person with a history of violence refusing care and services? The question is never answered. https://t.co/UsqU0MWeCh

Anyone can state axioms on left or right: “taxation is theft”; “services not cops” but they’re just slogans, they don’t deal with reality and the nuances of complicated situations.
— Zaid Jilani (@ZaidJilani) May 4, 2023
Ocasio Cortez obviously believes in security and coercion for herself, is it not applicable in any situation except protecting members of congress? https://t.co/UJwh62JfUO

If you say police can’t intervene, the criminal justice system can’t intervene, the medical system can’t intervene, what do you think will happen eventually? It doesn’t take Stephen Hawking to figure it out. State absence leads to violence. https://t.co/jJDCAIamct
— Zaid Jilani (@ZaidJilani) May 4, 2023
The police can’t intervene because that’s criminalizing mental illness.
The case is still being investigated and it’s not clear what happened. However, there’s a real failure to grapple with the consequences of your preferred policies. https://t.co/w6jtCCoMn4
— Zaid Jilani (@ZaidJilani) May 4, 2023
If you care about someone why would you let them continue to threaten themselves and others with no state intervention? Just ideology? Put ideology aside, reality matters sometimes.
— Zaid Jilani (@ZaidJilani) May 4, 2023
Yes, people are conflating cyclical homelessness (the majority) with chronic homelessness. Someone with deep mental issues and a series of violent acts under their belt is not going to be helped by just offering them housing alone. https://t.co/7aUmhFfvPH

Wait so now you believe that you shouldn’t look at systemic factors — that produce individuals behaviors? https://t.co/mH1ufddLg4
— Zaid Jilani (@ZaidJilani) May 4, 2023
Every other social problem we’re told it’s systemic and the fault of governing authorities but in this case all the policies and practices were correct it was just the matter of an individuals I’ll will?
— Zaid Jilani (@ZaidJilani) May 4, 2023
Everywhere in the world and throughout history when you have the state evacuating a space where it should be regulating dangerous or antisocial behavior you get this, be wary of being parochial in your analysis https://t.co/gpkNgvhHcL
— Zaid Jilani (@ZaidJilani) May 4, 2023
Her goal isn't to posit solutions to problems. It's to allow them to happen and criticize others when they must deal with them imperfectly. This tactic has been used to great effect lately.

When the state refuses to keep it's citizens safe the citizens are forced to keep themselves safe.
Seems pretty simple to me.

Answer: She has security who would manage the situation for her.

So many problems would be solved by mandating that public servants use public services.

Let the burden of their disturbances be socialised in the endangerment of the general public. Forbidding interference with his freedom to harass while using her own privilege and resources to recuse herself from consequences of her abandonment of responsibility for public safety
— MurphPsych (@MurphPsych) May 4, 2023
in a situation like this people like her are useless
— Cristobal (@Chris_Hadrick2) May 4, 2023
She answered it: Blame those who get scared by the disturbed person, if they over-react.
I doubt she would want to sit on the subway next to that person, but she doesn't have to.— Michoel Reach (@MichoelR613) May 4, 2023
Of course AOC won't say what she would do because she and her ilk don't really care about working people stuck riding on a subway, just as they don't care about women stuck sharing changing rooms with men. This is why the Democrats are hemorrhaging working-class voters.

Jilani’s getting hit was a lot of, “Not murder him, probably” in the replies. But we think Jilani asks a lot of good questions: even staunch conservatives believe the government has some duties, such as to keep the citizens safe. If that involves more intervention with people like Jordan Neely, then cities need to step up and get to work. And you can’t just say, if Neely wasn’t “houseless” this never would have happened. Blue cities have a lot of work to do, and it’s not setting up campsites and handing out needles and “safe-smoking kits.”
