John Oliver, Amy Schumer and more sign diversity pledge for late-night comedy writers

Now this is funny. As if late-night “comedy” writers weren’t already a joke, they’ve looked at themselves and decided there’s not enough diversity, equity, and inclusion among them. And so the Writers Guild has produced a pledge to make the writers’ rooms at shows like “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” more diverse and inclusive. No less than Amy Schumer has signed on, promising to rip off jokes from minorities as well as white comedians.

Rebecca Sun reports:

The Writers Guild of America East and Writers Guild of America West have crafted a pledge committing to improving diversity, equity and inclusion in late night and comedy/variety TV, signed by more than 50 supervisory scribes in the space.

The diverse group, which includes John Oliver, Amber Ruffin, Amy Schumer and Charlamagne tha God, acknowledges systemic barriers and a “sink or swim” culture that has historically excluded BIPOC writers and outlines some specific remedies for helping them enter, stay in and move up through the pipeline.

“Traditional pipelines into late night and comedy-variety television are historically overwhelmingly white, and it is, therefore, insufficient to rely solely upon them when making hiring decisions,” reads the joint statement, which also was signed by Trevor Noah, Samantha Bee, Desus Nice and The Kid Mero, whose shows or hosting stints recently concluded.

“Whose shows or hosting stints recently concluded.” We were wondering why Samantha Bee was still hanging in there like a nasty odor.

We’re sure more black trans women in the writers’ room will make comedy less woke and even funnier.

Late-night TV doesn’t have a lot of room to take risks what with competition from streaming … and Gutfeld, of course.
