WHO warns people not to attack monkeys because of the monkeypox outbreak

White House Covid Response Coordinator Ashish Jha addressed the monkeypox outbreak in July and stressed that what’s “really important” is not to use this moment “to propagate homophobic or transphobic messaging.” You can’t argue with the science.

We all know we have to walk on eggshells when talking about the monkeypox outbreak and how it’s spread, but the World Health Organization has another really important message: Don’t attack monkeys.

Marlene Lenthang reports for NBC News:

The World Health Organization is urging the public not to attack monkeys amid the monkeypox outbreak, following reports that primates have been poisoned and killed in Brazil.

“What people need to know is that the transmission we are seeing is happening between humans,” WHO spokesperson Dr. Margaret Harris said Tuesday at a press briefing in Geneva.

“The name chosen for this new disease is very unfortunate. Many people in Brazil believe that monkeys carry the disease and are persecuting these animals,” Giovanini said, adding, “We are very concerned because this represents a huge threat to wild animals in Brazil, which are already very endangered.”

As Twitchy reported, the New York City Department of Health wrote a letter to the WHO asking them to change the name of the disease due to its “painful and racist history.”

Can the WHO clarify for us just how monkeypox is spread so people stop blaming monkeys?
