Independence Day celebrations in Akron, Ohio have been canceled following the release of video footage showing police officers shooting and killing 25-year-old Jayland Walker. There were protests in the city overnight and they’ll likely continue into Monday night.

The Daily Wire reported:
On June 27, Akron authorities said they pursued Walker because the car he drove was involved in a crime the previous day. After refusing to stop, speeding through a residential neighborhood, and shooting at officers, Walker jumped out of the car in motion at a barricade.
Police said they fired up to 60 bullets at Walker after he jumped out of the moving vehicle and shot at the officers.
Although he did not have the gun with him as he ran, Police Chief Stephen Mylett said the video showed Walker reaching for something at his waist and turning as he ran, prompting the police to fire.
But to Walker actually take aim and fire at the police officers? WKYC reporter says there’s no evidence yet, only dispatch recordings of police saying “shots fired.”
The “shot at” narrative is nuanced, but no one from APD says #JaylenWalker fired “at” officers. Officers recorded in dispatch recordings saying “shot fired”…the shot is seen and heard on video. No evidence yet of Walker taking aim and firing. The difference matters. https://t.co/BmorAOa2sr

So, he fired indiscriminately and that’s supposed to be excusable?
— Factotum (@emery__bored) July 4, 2022
"if he fired indiscriminately that's fine" is a hell of a take

Oh cool so he just fired a random shot that could have struck an innocent victim. Solid defense.

Guns still kill without "taking aim".

If he’s a terrible shot, it doesn’t count as shooting at you

At best this is a distinction with no difference.

Shot at or shots fired indicates the person fleeing from them has a gun. And if that someone fires a round, they are putting innocent lives at risk. Bullets eventually hit something. At them or others, the police have a duty to protect.

This is the angle they're going to play huh?

So the guy wearing a ski mask in June and fleeing the police fired a shot, but it was not necessarily at the police. Do I have that right?
— Sluggo Stevens (@SluggoStevens) July 4, 2022
That’s more dangerous, you realize that right? God knows who he ends up hitting.

I’ve never been in a position to advocate the destruction of my hometown. What’s that like being instrumental in bringing about?
