It was back in 2016 when people went back to Sen. Ted Cruz’s college years, and his freshman roommate went on a Twitter tirade about him, making the news. Anyone paying attention to the media’s coverage of Cruz when Cruz was running for senator in 2012 knows the pattern on his college bathrobe: it was The Daily Beast that tracked down any classmate who would trash him, with writer Patricia Murphy asking, “Can a master debater who wore a paisley bathrobe to creepily stroll by the women’s wing of the dorm be the next president?”
On Friday, Rep. Elise Stefanik was elected to replace Rep. Liz Cheney as the House Republican Conference Chair, and a woman who went to Harvard with her and admittedly “didn’t know her well at all” decided to trash her in a thread:
1/6 Elise Stefanik and I both attended Harvard (she was ahead of me, but many mutual friends). Didn’t know her well at all, but I always had a negative impression of her—my gut told me she was phony and untrustworthy. But people probably thought of us in same vein because we

2/6 were both conservatives (I was a rabble-rousing columnist for The Crimson, ruffled plenty of feathers). When Elise ran for Congress, I was working at the Goldwater Institute, highly engaged in conservative/GOP politics. Unsurprisingly, lots of mutual friends—including Dems—

3/6 started fundraising for Elise, and unsurprisingly, lots of them called to ask me for help because they assumed I, a conservative, would be happy to support her. I avoided/put them off, never gave her a dime, politely declined to be helpful. It was awkward, but I just had a

4/6 tremendously bad feeling about her. Then she won, our mutual friends were really excited (recall that back then she was the youngest woman ever elected to Congress), and I pretty much forgot the whole thing. When I did think about it, I felt bad for maybe being too harsh.

5/6 So Elise began her congressional …well, shall we call it a journey? Things seemed okay—she was the nakedly ambitious narcissist I suspected, but she was saying the right things. But soon the attention for Elise dried up. That’s when Elise really began showing us who she is.

6/6 Elise Stefanik has turned out to be exactly who I thought she was all those years ago—actually, worse. @RadioFreeTom invoked “Tracy Flick” this AM, but I’d argue Tracy Flick is less craven.
Moral of the story: Trust your gut. If someone seems like a monster, she probably is.
— Lucy Caldwell (@lucymcaldwell) May 14, 2021
So who is Lucy Caldwell anyway and where’d she get that blue check? It turns out she was the campaign manager for Joe Walsh’s run for president in 2020.
My God… pic.twitter.com/0J9MjhhVgb

You’d think she’d have deleted that from her Twitter bio by now, seeing as she knows a monster when she sees one.
The genre of "I saw this person twice on the quad when we were undergrads so here's my take on their current career" is so tiresome. https://t.co/iCiXFrRmnX

"I didn't know her well at all but here is the negative impression I had of her" is literally just decades old rumors rooted in nothing.
Anyone could make up anything with that qualifier.

Also literally everyone on earth has people they came across at some point in their life who don't like them, whether fairly or unfairly.
— Noam Blum 🦉 (@neontaster) May 15, 2021
This seems like a very Harvard thing.
— Crowbacca (@Crowesq) May 15, 2021
I have a gut feeling about a campaign manager for Joe Walsh that I just can't identify.
— Jason (@Jason_SCSU_Alum) May 15, 2021
Some friends and myself once shared an elevator with AOC. I feel she has a large stash of kiddie porn. I can confirm some of my other friends also felt it.
— Joe Gibson (@Joegibson103) May 15, 2021
But she took the time to craft a six tweet thread so maybe we should adopt her super serious opinion based on her gut feeling formed during college?? 🤔
— johnny2678 (@johnny2678) May 15, 2021
Seems like a lot of words to say "I went to Harvard"
— Leigh Hunt (@leighmhunt) May 15, 2021
@NoahCRothman was a grad student while I was a sophomore and you wouldn't believe what I saw him put on his waffles at the cafeteria.
— AJ (@aj_iu14) May 15, 2021
This sounds like jealousy. Her own friends think she’s good enough to be friends with and have nothing bad to say about her.
— Nicole (@RandomShy) May 15, 2021
Amazing that the moral of this story is “if you have a bad feeling about someone you don’t know well, you’re probably right.”
— luke 19 40 (@luke_40) May 15, 2021
She’s a middle school mean girl who never grew up.
— Mark Harrison (@meh130) May 15, 2021
You mean to tell me the campaign manager for walsh2020 who tagged radio free Tom in the last tweet, that she might not be on the up and up? No way
— Dr (@bbqdudefrmAR) May 15, 2021
I never went to Harvard, and have never met her or even read something on Elise Stefanik, but we’re only 6 degrees of separation apart so here is my take…
— Mouse That Roared (@MiceThatRoar16) May 15, 2021
Campaign manager for Joe Walsh has thoughts on politics. 😂
— Theodore Roosevelt (@TheodoreRoosev8) May 15, 2021
# Walsh2020🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
— 🇺🇸 🇮🇱 (@Clint4USA) May 15, 2021
That’s an awful lot of Tweets to say she’s jealous and self own.
— boomer libertarian (@BevevinoJohn) May 15, 2021
Does this person realize she comes across as pathetically jealous???
— John of the Door (@JohnoftheDoor) May 15, 2021
But she invokes the opinion of Tom Nichols, so…

I didn’t know Stefanik well years and years ago, but I got the feeling she was a monster so I thought I’d tweet about it.
