The Democrats, led by Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, fought aggressively against the GOP “tax scam” and lost, and suddenly the middle class was paying less in taxes and businesses were giving out bonuses and raises.
They’ll still argue that the GOP tax cuts only benefitted the rich, but what really has Schumer upset is the $10,000 cap on state and local taxes that can be deducted on individual returns, where previously there was no limit, meaning residents of high-tax blue states would suddenly wake up and realize how much they were paying the state.
New York, Connecticut, Maryland, and New Jersey are all taking their challenge to the federal appeals court.
Probably nothing in the Trump-Republican tax law has done more to hurt middle-class and suburban families in New York and across the country than the cap on deductions for state and local taxes.
We must continue aggressively fighting to remove this cap.https://t.co/wPWfNEh5QU
— Chuck Schumer (@SenSchumer) November 27, 2019
You keep on fighting that cap … or, you could just lower state and local taxes to a reasonable level.

Actually, the egregiously high local and state taxes in New York are the root of the problem.
— Timothy S (@pinotman) November 27, 2019
Or…… Blue States could lower taxes?
— Dan Schuler (@Dan_Schuler) November 27, 2019
I like how you’re using “suburban” in place for “upper middle class” because those constituents are mad about high state taxes. Deal with it.
— Kaitlin, gargantuan woman (@thefactualprep) November 27, 2019
From the same Senator who told us we paid higher taxes after the tax cut, when in actuality, we didn't adjust our W-4 forms for withholding, and thus had to write a check, in some cases, when filing our returns. Sadly, many believed this falsehood
— Erick (@ErickInNC) November 27, 2019
Only highly taxed blue states, which is why Cuomo is suing on behalf of NY's rich. Where's all the "fair share" screaming, now?
We can fix it by eliminating high taxes in these states.
— TrollLady© (@thurmanlady1) November 27, 2019
Yes a cap on the corruption of local governments being subsidized by taxpayers. Tell them to stop taking money and filling their pockets.
— USA ('Sarge') (@Dmbsr312) November 27, 2019
It’s about time someone in another state didn’t have to pickup the tab for another states shitty tax laws!
Comment should read “Democrats’, local and State Tax Laws in NY and in others states, are a unrealistic burden on middle class and suburban families.?
It’s more accurate!
— Joan wilson (@MyJoWilson) November 27, 2019
Just lower our state taxes, Chuck. It's not complicated.
— Jason Becker (@jason5becker) November 27, 2019
Nothing in the Cuomo-Democrat run gov’t has done more to hurt middle class & suburban families in New York & across other Democrat run cities & states than the too high state & local taxes. We must continue aggressively fighting to remove you all. There, I fixed it for you!
— Suzette (@Suzzgt) November 27, 2019
No it’s the NY taxes that have hurt the middle class. The tax cut helped anyone whose homeowner taxes are under 10,000 that excludes everyone on Long Island. I do get more in my paycheck through
— Laurie Zucchero (@ZuccheroLaurie) November 27, 2019
Why does your state tax so much on middle class citizens? Your deductions were just a transfer of wealth from low tax states (red) to high tax states (blue). Glad it's in place..
— The Crazy Czech ⭐⭐⭐ (@belej_p) November 27, 2019
Or maybe aggressively fight to reduce state and local spending?
— Lou Brandeis (@LouBrandeis) November 27, 2019
OR…those high-tax states could work to reduce taxation levels to the point where the SALT cap doesn't matter all that much.
— Jay Caruso (@JayCaruso) November 27, 2019
Let's try having better state budgets with less local and state taxes. Especially outrageous property taxes
— Ted Kaiser RESTORE USC (@Tek13) November 27, 2019
NY just needs to lower taxes – substantially
— J Browning (@JBrowning1776) November 27, 2019
These are all democrat-controlled high tax-and-spend States. Maybe a better idea is for them to enact common sense tax reform before they lose their wealthy population and businesses to states that do it right.
— RL Murray (@RobLMurray) November 27, 2019
I see no reason why high state and local taxes should reduce your federal obligation one cent. Time to pay your fair share! End the blue state subsidy.
— David Sergent (@DGSergent) November 27, 2019
The problem is unsustainably high state and local taxes.
— pirkster (@pirkster_jax) November 27, 2019
Very confident the Democrat tax laws in NY is what is hurting families.
Cut taxes. Easy fix. #WalkAwayFromDemocrats— Brian schonover (@brian_schonover) November 27, 2019
It only hurts your deep blue states that punish their people with very high tax rates. You should be happy. I’m a R in CA and I got shafted. When I retire I’m moving so you’re beloved CA will get even more blue
— Barking Spider (@Barking5pider) November 27, 2019
Perhaps states should lower their taxes allowing their citizens to keep more of their own money.
— Man-Bear-Pig (@Man_Bear_Pig3) November 27, 2019
Oh: I thought it was New York's ridiculous taxes that hurt. Carry on!
— Anthony Bialy (@AnthonyBialy) November 27, 2019
It’s time for the citizens of NY to reconsider their votes. Find politicians that put their citizens first. If they want to subsidize far left policies that’s up to them. Don’t ask the rest of the country to subsidize them as well.
— SL Nichols (@slnichols2) November 27, 2019
If state and local taxes are high enough to push middle class wage earners over the now higher standard deduction, then state and local taxes are too high.
— Stephen Tabb (@Tabb1Tabb) November 27, 2019
@SenSchumer how’s this for an idea. Lower the state and local taxes.
— Shelby Lawhon (@ShelbyLawhon) November 27, 2019
A New York state tax problem isn’t a 49-other-states problem.
— Rigby Reardon (@hawkeyegoob) November 27, 2019
Then perhaps New York should reduce its criminally confiscatory and growth killing tax rates.
— Larry Gates (@AggieLarry) November 27, 2019
Chucky, you're saying that because States like New York have ridiculously high income taxes, it was Trump who has hurt people from the states that elected tax and spend liberals.
— VegasBoomer (@VegasBoomer) November 27, 2019
Have you considered lowering your state's taxes? Oh wait, nevermind.
— Eric S. Henson (@eshenson) November 27, 2019
Or maybe taxes are ridiculously high in new York?
— ??cory lugenbeal?? (@corylugenbeal) November 27, 2019
Or lower state income taxes. Why should us from Florida subsidize NY’s share of the federal tax burden. That’s the reason people are leaving your state chuckles, the ridiculous taxes they have to pay there.
— Kevin (@kcrowe76) November 27, 2019
Here’s an idea, states and localities can reduce their burdensome taxes. There. Solved.
— CrazyJoeDavola (@GroundChuck125) November 27, 2019
Maybe after the lawsuit is thrown out again New York might consider lowering taxes? Nah.
