Conservatives have asked it plenty of times already, and we’ll ask it again: when are the same people calling “Pocahontas” a racial slur when applied to Elizabeth Warren ever going to address the process by which the senator got that nickname (or better yet, Fauxcahontas) in the first place?
Actor and comedian Kumail Nanjiani weighed in on President Trump’s jab Monday:
Calling a member of any race/ethnicity by the name of another famous member of that race/ethnicity is racist.
The More You Know.

That's just so…contrived. https://t.co/kSB5usLkcj
— Eli Sowry (@UnrealElijah) November 28, 2017
Hang on, though … so is Nanjiani confirming that Elizabeth Warren is actually part Cherokee? Because to a lot of people, it looked like Trump was calling a white woman by the name of a famous Native American woman.
What if the person in question isn't the race they said they were? This whole thing is getting really confusing :/ https://t.co/BiJ1NW45Qu
— JiltedLeft (@JiltedLeft) November 28, 2017
I really don't think that's the problem with what happened. https://t.co/2hCeNGgBgx
— Rationally Pastiming (@RationalPastime) November 28, 2017
Warren isn’t a member of that race… so… https://t.co/4kxZL5V6DG
— Dale Jackson (@TheDaleJackson) November 28, 2017
She is not of that "race/ethnicity", or just about 3 percent, according to some sources.
She just pretends to be.
That's the whole point of the joke.
And this is not "racism".🙄https://t.co/i5ObITQNgT

What if you call a white person the name of a famous Indian? https://t.co/YHzkwODtzO

Totally disagree with Trump using “Pocahontas” phrase at ceremony today; however, he did not call a Native American Pocahontas. He called out a White, entitled woman who LIED about her ethnicity for personal gains. Both are wrong and disgraceful, but needed clarification. https://t.co/jmYffig7KL

While true, it's not quite as racist as lying about your ethnicity for a job. https://t.co/z1Xlkw2beY

What do you call pretending to be a member of a minority group just get preferential treatment and further one's career? https://t.co/PSnb2mGnYk
— Eric Spencer (@JustEric) November 28, 2017
What's the word for appropriating a culture to receive preferential treatment and thus denying members of that group their entitled benefits?

Claiming to be a particular race in order to obtain privileges meant for that particular race is also racist. Just so you know… and demonstration of really low character as well. The More You Know. https://t.co/LBZUYqgajX

It’s not racist as long as you lie about it to reap the benefits of affirmative action 🤔🤔 https://t.co/WrKObSiGt9

It’s a racial slur for her to call herself a Native American. https://t.co/zIH640jSbh

Props to Kumail, sticking up for Trump as an actor on an HBO series is a brave thing to do.
