CBS News takes a beating for its report on New Black Panthers purchasing explosives

Maybe, maybe not. CBS News is reporting Friday night that the FBI yesterday arrested two men, believed to be members of the New Black Panthers, accused of purchasing explosives they planned to use in the protests in Ferguson, Mo. The men, who have not been identified by CBS News, were arrested on outstanding warrants, FBI spokeswoman Rebecca Wu told CBS News.

Valerie Hahn, a reporter for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, writes that two men, believed to be affiliated with the New Black Panthers, were taken into custody Friday morning on weapons charges for allegedly making straw purchases of two handguns at an area Cabela’s sporting goods store.

The indictment was handed up Wednesday and unsealed today accusing Brandon Orlando Baldwin and Olajuwon Davis of making false statements to obtain firearms. The defendants’ ages and addresses were not made public.

According to the indictment, between Nov. 1 and 13, Baldwin, also known as Brandon Muhammad, and Olajuwon, also known as Olajuwon Ali and Brother Ali, acquired two Hi-Point .45 ACP pistols at the store, claiming that Baldwin was the buyer when, in fact, the weapons were intended for someone else.

Are they two separate incidents or a case of misinterpretation? Reporters are trying to gain confirmation from the FBI.

In any case, CBS News is the media source taking the beating on Twitter, though. Pipe bombs? No way.

So, no one’s questioning the Post-Dispatch story on the New Black Panthers illegally buying guns, and everyone’s OK with that?
