The Democratic Party Is Coming for Our Guns

AP Photo/Josh Anderson

A week ago, Annunciation Catholic Church and school in Minneapolis, Minnesota, was the latest target of Left-wing, transgender violence. The alleged shooter, Robert (Robin) Westman, was a 'trans-identified' male who wrote anti-Catholic, anti-Trump slogans on the weapons he used to shoot dozens of children at Mass.

He killed two of them: eight-year-old Fletcher Merkel and ten-year-old Harper Moyski. My youngest son is 12; he and his older brother both attend Catholic school. If you think my heart doesn't ache for the Merkel and Moyski families, you're sorely mistaken.

There is a discussion that needs to be had in this nation -- namely, one regarding the mental health of men and women who believe they were born in the wrong body (more on that in a bit).

What we do not need to have is another exhausting, unconstitutional attempt by the Democratic Party to grab our guns. But the gun-grabbers never sleep, and there is no tragedy they won't exploit in an effort to pass their anti-gun agenda. The Minneapolis shooting is simply the latest canon fodder for the Left's war on our right to keep and bear arms.

They're not even hiding it this time. Several prominent Democrats have called for federal action on guns, including Minnesota's Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan (who apparently thinks knife crime in the name of 'protecting trans kids' is acceptable):

This, of course, is an admission that Minnesota's already strict gun laws don't work. The state has universal background checks, red flag laws, laws about safe storage, and a ban on bump stocks. None of those laws were broken when Westman purchased the weapons he used in the shooting. Annunciation Catholic Church and school was also a gun-free zone. Westman broke those laws.

Oh, and the laws against homicide.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, who can't define what an assault rifle is, demands that federal agents go door-to-door and confiscate guns from law-abiding Americans.

I'd very much like to watch this play out, because there are over 100 million guns in this country.

Democrats like Frey insist they can't prosecute all crime, and that we can't possibly remove all illegal immigrants from this nation, but they believe they'll be able to knock on our doors and take our guns.

They also want to defund the police, so who will they hire to be their jackbooted thugs to enforce this law?

Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar also demanded the banning of firearms in the United States:

Refusing to uphold the oath she swore to the Constitution should be grounds for censure and removal from Congress.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz weighed in, too, calling for gun laws like those in Australia and Scotland

Scotland and Australia are not free. In the U.K., comedians are arrested for 'gender critical' X posts, grannies are jailed for Facebook memes, and even saying you love bacon is an offense punishable with jail time. In Scotland, migrants can harass young girls, and those young girls are arrested for defending themselves with 'bladed weapons' (because the U.K. banned guns, you see).

In Australia, less than a quarter of a century passed between that nation banning guns and it rounding up civilians to put them in COVID camps, where they threatened people with longer incarceration if they misbehaved.

The Australian gun ban didn't stop Victoria man Dezi Freeman from getting his hands on weapons, by the way. Freeman shot and killed two law enforcement officers and injured a third before fleeing into the Outback. Nor did it stop gun crime in the U.K.: a 45-year-old man was shot and killed in North London on August 4 and a 40-year-old woman was shot and killed in Talbot Green in March.

Tim Walz, of course, thinks 'hate speech' and 'disinformation' aren't protected by the First Amendment, so he's probably jealous the U.K. can lock up people for speech. He was also the guy who sent law enforcement to pelt citizens with paintballs for the 'crime' of being on their porch during COVID lockdowns.

So, forgive me if I don't agree with his definition of freedom, and if I vehemently oppose his plan to ban guns. Guns he -- and running mate Kamala Harris -- promised they weren't going to take from us if they were elected last November. I knew it was a lie then, but it's nice of Walz to confirm that for me.

The narrative, of course, is that places like Chicago simply wouldn't have gun crime if those pesky red states like Indiana didn't run guns into the Windy City. At least, that's what Chicago's Mayor Brandon Johnson argued, the week after 50+ people were shot and seven were killed on his watch.

Senator Dick Durban is running with this narrative, too.

As pointed out, the guns used in crimes in Illinois ... come from Illinois. Not from Indiana. But more to the point, if guns were the problem, why doesn't Indiana have a rampant crime problem like Chicago? Even Gary, IN, has a per-capita rate of gun crime that's three times less than Chicago.

The problem here is not the guns. The problem is the governance of places like Chicago, where career criminals like William Livingston can violently assault not one, not two, but five different women and be released from prison over and over again. It's politicians like Illinois governor J.B. Pritzker who shrug and say 'big cities have crime.'

The problem is also the Democratic Party, which decided to 'affirm' individuals in their trans-related mental illness, when biological and social reality make such affirmation impossible. Walz and Flanagan made Minnesota a 'safe haven' for the trans community. Minnesota AG Keith Ellison vowed to fight for 'gender-affirming care' for kids in his state, and Jacob Frey hoped the Annunciation shooting wouldn't drive people to 'demean' the trans community.

Democrats will never change how they govern, they will never become tough-on-crime, and they will never be honest about their role in inflicting mental harm on the 'trans' community. Instead, they are making the political calculation that they can use the deaths of children at Mass to strip Americans like me of our Second Amendment rights.

They are sorely mistaken.
