President Obama has lost some allies on the Left, but not dedicated fluffer Robert De Niro. Politico wants you to know the actor is standing by his man. De Niro gives Obama credit for “trying.”

He’s a good person, period,” he says. “He’s trying his best. He’s going to do things that people feel are not right or violating one right or another. But at the end of the day, he represents, I think, the best of the type of people that I would like to see running the government. He has to play that game, the political game. They all do. They make statements they can’t honor because they’re impossible to honor. Once you get into that Washington machinery, you’ve just got to figure it out and swim against the current and grab onto this rock and that, and just try to maintain your course.”

Obama is “trying”? Indeed. We find him very trying.

Scary thought:

Try, try again. If at first (or second or third) you don’t succeed, the media will cover it up and you’ll get elected for a second term because Romney is rich, or something.

  • Acethepug

Welcome to the world of the special snowflake, where everyone gets a trophy, where no one keeps score, and where this type of touchy-feely crap does absolutely squadoo to prepare people for the Real World.

Maybe that’s the problem. President Participation has never LIVED in the Real World. He’s never WORKED in the Real World. Hollywood doesn’t bear much resemblance to the Real World, either.

Theories are great, self-esteem is great. Results actually MEAN something.

I’m pretty sure Romney genuinely tried, that GW Bush genuinely tried — why isn’t Hollywood and the media figuratively fellating them, too?

Time for President Participation to grow the hell up and either produce results, or to be replaced by someone who can. Someone posted that the President is, in essence, the CEO of the United States.

Companies don’t tolerate grotesque incompetance, why should the public?
President Participation set that Red Line himself, stupidly.

Why is it anyone else’s responsibility to extricate him from a mess of his own making? And what does “he’s trying” even MEAN in that context?

I wait for an adult to be back in the White House. Detractors can say whatever they like, but GW Bush for all his faults wasn’t just “trying.”

He picked a course of action (oddly enough, one that was not Unconstitutional) and stuck with it.

President Participation … is a weather vane.

Don’t you mean that Pres’ent Obama is climate change vain ?

  • BadGirloftheNorth

Frankly, I would rather have the rat bastard De NIro plays in most of his movies as a leader (who actually LEADS); than a good person that everything he touches turns to $hit. Good leaders are rarely the good golfers, or ‘one of the guys’. De Niro is De Faro off in LEFT field about this one.

  • grais

Goodlord, I hadn’t realized DeNiro was such a doofus.

    • pajamakat

It is a bit hard to believe. But wasn’t he the one that asked if were ready for a “white” first lady. Of course referring to the greatness of mooochi

      • grais

I had forgotten about that. Guess that illustrates how important DeNiro’s musings are to me.

    • lainer51

He has been slobbering and drooling over Barry since 2008.

  • BadGirloftheNorth

I would rather have one of the bad boy characters De Niro plays in most of his movies who would actually LEAD for a president than a good guy that is a bumbling fool. Good leaders are not the good golfers or ‘one of the guys’. De Niro is De Faro out in Left field on this one.

  • Right Wired

DeNiro should know all about ‘staying the course’ – he’s the guy who played the same character in 92 different movies.

    • FilleGitane

Come to think of it, De Niro actually has two speeds forward: the psycho and the corrupt but well-meaning priest.

    • Spiny Norman

Oh, but he’s done it so well!

Personally, I don’t care if he’s “played the same character” in every picture. He’s still cool on the screen – especially if Marty is directing him. I have no interest in hearing his pronouncements on politics – the same thing with pro athletes and musicians.

  • R.C.

    “Obama tried, people died.”
    Who is Ben Ghazi?

  • DorothyGrissom

Hmm..I’m a bit confused, Mr. DeNiro. Are you for or against Obama? Because given Obama’s massive scandals and failures, what you said, “Obama is trying his best,” just may be the WORST condemnation of Obama I’ve heard to date. BTW: You’re a very good actor. Stick to what you’re good at.

  • MyselfMeI

In reality (nothing to do with Obama) (: what’s wrong with every participant in a competition getting a tiny trophy if the winners get bigger ones?

    • Jesus_A_Rivera

It breeds contempt, it breeds complacency, it stops people from trying. It’s like a company that offers a bonus of $1000 for the sale of the most widgets, if there is 10 people trying for that bonus, guess what, there is going to be 10 competing, trying their best, making that extra effort to come up on top. If however, that same company offers only a $200 bonus to the best, and divides the other $800 into the other 9, why even try, since you know that you are going to get something either way. The fact that the bigger bonus goes to the best (and since it’s bigger), does not allow for an incentive enough for them to try harder. You’d still get roughly $90 bonus, without even batting your eyelids.

    • therealguyfaux

If kids got a “Thank you for playing in the Podunk Little League, and Best of Luck in your future endeavors” form letter, that would be one thing– none of us would object to that, I’m sure– that sort of “kind” gesture would “reward” mere participation.

If you’re going to set up some sort of trophy system to give children the incentive to excel, it cheapens the idea of rewarding excellence to give everyone a trophy, no matter how small as compared to the champion’s.

      • MyselfMeI

I’m talking about the TINY trophies, the ones with a little figure on that white part only, no column holding it up. When I see one of those, I’ve always known that the person didn’t win anything, that it was rewarding participation and effort only. My dad was given them for finishing road races back in the non-PC early ’80’s*, and he was in his 40’s at the time!
And what about the Special Olympics? Every competitor gets at least a ribbon for participation (the top three in each event get medals) Would people say, “Well, that’s ok, because they’re mentally disabled?”
*not that he personally cared whether he got one or not, but they were given to all finishers.
P.S. When there was a kids’ beauty pageant going on at the mall near me, the non-winners were given average-sized trophies simply for participation, and I did think that was too much. (not to mention that the toddler category looked more like a dog show than a pageant, but, well, that’s just my opinion) (:
P.P.S. I mean no disrespect to Special Olympics athletes by the way. I have several friends who compete/competed in it who can do a lot of things I can’t come close to doing, and I also have a disability myself. (Asperger Syndrome) plus I know that while everyone may get a ribbon, not everyone moves on to the World Games.

      • Jay Stevens

But suppose everybody is from Lake Wobegone where everyone is above average?

        • MyselfMeI

Depends on the standard. If we talk about the accomplishment of running the USA into the ground and making us a laughingstock around the world, Barky is doing a good job.

Don’t get it? Check out pics of him on the red carpet. You’ll figure it out.

  • http://whenfallsthecoliseum.com/author/kwatson/ megapotamus

There’s not much to object to in DeNiro’s statement except that it is highly selective in its application. He recognizes that man goes not from error to rectitude but from error to error. Only his own guy is worthy of that consideration though.

  • Joe W.

Like R.P. McMurphy (Jack Nicholson), in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” after he failed to lift the water fountain…”But I tried, goddammit….at least I did THAT!!”…..Barky is NO Jack Nicholson either….

  • Magnifico

If you read De Niro’s comment, he accuses Obama of violating our rights, lying, and flip-flopping. Fortunately for Obama, Bob’s fine with all of that.

    • tops116

Somehow I doubt DeNiro would ever have argued “At least Bush is trying.”

Mr. DeNiro, I love “Ronin”, “Raging Bull”, and some of your other movies. So just entertain me and leave your political opinions to yourself.

    • Spiny Norman

      Shut up and play!

In other words, as shouted at the Dixie Chicks a decade ago, iirc (or was it directed at John Fogarty? – or maybe both).

      • tops116

Personally, I preferred “Shut up and don’t play!”

  • Spiny Norman

If I’m not mistaken, “He’s a good person, period,” he says. “He’s trying his best.” is basically “Damning with faint praise”. It doesn’t come across to me as complimentary as De Niro intended.

  • TocksNedlog

De Niro did NOT ‘try’ in “Rocky & Bullwinkle”.
    Not even a little bit.

    • tops116

DeNiro hasn’t been trying since the late 80s.

  • TocksNedlog

Yes, let’s give President “I voted ‘present'” his participation trophy.

    • tops116

DeNiro’s hoping Obama will give him a “Hey, at least you stood in front of the camera, right?” participation trophy.

  • porgiefirefighter

He tried his best to blame Benghazi on a cheap video disrespecting the prophet. Yes he did.

  • Billie Slash

So DeNiro is saying that Obama is one of the goodfellas? Well, that’s the godfather of idiotic statements!

  • BeauDCrab

I did my best, but I guess My best wasn’t good enough, ‘cuz here we are right where we were before ….

  • lainer51

Too bad his best isn’t good enough!

  • tops116

I can see why DeNiro is sticking up for Obama. Both suck at their chosen professions and only get by by coasting off the goodwill of their dwindling supporters. But at least with DeNiro, he’s only wasting millions instead of trillions.

And hey, Bob, if you’d really like to push this notion of Obama doing his best, feel free to get in touch with the families of Brian Terry, Christopher Stevens, Sean Smith, Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods. I’m sure they’d *love* to hear what you have to say on the subject.

    • Klankity

I kinda think Bob have to Google those names to have a clue who you’re talking about. Just like Obama would.

  • Notjack

  • tankdemon
  • bflat879

Do I remember DeNiro and friends telling us that Bush was trying his best? Of course not and that’s one of the reasons some of us a pretty cynical about this president and his political party. They’ve done everything they can to divide this country and, now that they’ve succeeded, they start telling us we have to understand that the president is trying his best.

I’ll start having more respect for them and this president when I see some respect coming my way. THis president has been all politics all the time, has built not bridges to the Republicans and now he’s paying the price. The biggest problem is the country has to pay the price with him. He has a long way to go to convince me he’s sincere.

  • Joseph Pickett

I only ask that we use the same standard for all presidents – ‘he’s trying.’ That didn’t seem to apply in the Bush/Hitler years of yore.
