On Tuesday, the Associated Press announced that “illegal immigrant” was a completely unacceptable term to describe … an illegal immigrant. But the language cops aren’t done yet. The AP has issued a new, “more nuanced” definition of “Islamist.”

The revision comes after The Council on American-Islamic Relations pressured the AP to help ensure that “Islamist” wasn’t used as “a pejorative shorthand for extremist Muslims or ‘Muslims we don’t like.’

“It might be an interesting exercise to hold a contest, the winner of which would be the first to find a positive mainstream media reference to ‘Islamist,” wrote CAIR’s Ibrahim Hooper earlier this year.

Here’s the new definition:

An advocate or supporter of a political movement that favors reordering government and society in accordance with laws prescribed by Islam. Do not use as a synonym for Islamic fighters, militants, extremists or radicals, who may or may not be Islamists. Where possible, be specific and use the name of militant affiliations: al-Qaida-linked, Hezbollah, Taliban, etc. Those who view the Quran as a political model encompass a wide range of Muslims, from mainstream politicians to militants known as jihadi.

What’s the word on proper usage of “right-wing extremist“?

Naturally, CAIR is thrilled with this victory.

“We believe this revision is a step in the right direction and will result in fewer negative generalizations in coverage of issues related to Islam and Muslims,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “The key issue with the term ‘Islamist’ is not its continued use; the issue is its use almost exclusively as an ill-defined pejorative.”

Next the group can push for a ban on the term “unindicted co-conspirator.”

Heh. The AP might have its journalists on board, but some Muslim leaders have other ideas about the word “Islamist.”

Nuance, according to the dictionary: ‘A subtle or slight degree of difference, as in meaning, feeling, or tone; a gradation.’

Nuance according to the Mainstream Media: complete redefinition of the word(s)

“The purpose of Newspeak was not only to provide a medium of expression for the world-view and mental habits proper to the devotees of IngSoc (English Socialism), but to make all other modes of thought impossible. It was intended that whenNewspeak had been adopted once and for all and Oldspeak forgotten, a heretical thought — that is, a thought diverging from the principles of IngSoc — should be literally unthinkable, at least so far as thought is dependent on words. Its vocabulary was so constructed as to give exact and often very subtle expression to every meaning that a Party member could properly wish to express, while excluding all other meaning and also the possibility of arriving at them by indirect methods. This was done partly by the invention of new words, but chiefly by eliminating undesirable words and stripping such words as remained of unorthodox meanings…” 1984

Who needs nuance? How about reporters go for accuracy. I suggest tossing out “Islamist” and replace it with “Islamo-fascist”

I don’t suppose “Christian fundamentalist” is up for clarification at this time. One who believes in the fundamental tenets of Christianity is not necessarily the equivalent of one who self interprets out of context passages of the bible literally and tries to use their interpretation to influence society. That would be like saying that a football coach drilling his team on the fundamentals of football must be a whack-job.

  • onejn416

Is it a surprise? Islam is derived from the Arabic root “Salema”: peace, purity, submission and obedience. That is specific to their religion. They specifically believe they are in a state of “Jihad”, holy war until the last unbeliever on earth is either dead or converted. I would say it looks like the AP got converted.

I fully support AP on this change. I stopped using the word “Democrat” years ago. I just say “turd” now.

Is the AP adding any nuance to the phrase “separation of church and state?”

It’s interesting. They still spell out that it’s a political religious movement, yet the morons on the left are still screaming separation of church and state only when it comes to Christianity—which does not seek to overthrow the government. (reorder=overthrow) Wake up or man up, whichever it is you need to do people on the left

“Islamist” is a silly term (“Christianist”?) that’s more confusing than explanatory. Better to just use “Muslim,” “Jihadist” or “Terrorist” since the actions of Muslims worldwide have made all three terms interchangeable and very explanatory. Thanks, Muslims!
