The MSNBC diversity cops have reportedly selected Chris Hayes to replace Ed Schultz in the 8:00 p.m. time slot. Schultz will slink away to an oh-so-coveted weekend gig on the network.

Brian Stelter reports:

Mr. Hayes, a liberal intellectual who has hosted a well-regarded weekend morning program on MSNBC for the past 18 months, is a protege of Rachel Maddow, the highest-rated host on the channel. He will become the lead-in for her 9 p.m. program, “The Rachel Maddow Show.”

The change is predicated on the belief that MSNBC can win a wider audience with Mr. Hayes than it did with Mr. Schultz, a champion of the working class whose bluster didn’t always pair well with Ms. Maddow and the channel’s other prime time program, “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell.” Mr. Hayes, on the other hand, is just as wonky as Ms. Maddow and Mr. O’Donnell, and is a regular contributor to both of their programs.

Ah, the unbearable whiteness of being an anchor at monochromatic MSNBC.

Come on, guys. It’s about time MSNBC had “one of America’s leading conservative voices” anchoring a prime time slot! Isn’t that diversity? Media Matters says Chris Hayes is good enough — some of his best friends are bringers of increased diversity!

And besides, there’s still room to diversify the MSNBC lineup, right?

Drool bucket alert:

  • Maxx

MSNBC switching Schultz for Chris Hayes is going to create the same disappointment a wife gets when she discovers hubby #2 has s**t stains in his draws too.

    • Garth Haycock

I prefer the term “skid marks”.

  • grais

Swapping out one pastyman hysteric for another.

Hoping for the “juiceboxer”(love that one) demographic?

  • CatHerder

    Isn’t ‘liberal intellectual’ an oxymoron?

    • LightSabre

      That caught my attention, too!

    • Patrick Dennehy

      Just like ‘Catholic Democrat’

      • lainer51

      • Barack Hussein Sharpton

Guess that makes Hayes the femme.

    • Garth Haycock

Yep. If Maddow were a woman, he would look like Hayes.

    • Tantalus XVI

thats creepy! They are the prototypes for the master race 2.0.

    • John Smith

Except Maddow is more man than Hayes.

    • Barack Hussein Sharpton

I heard that in order to save money, MessNBC is going to use the same intro to both Hayes’ and Maddow’s shows, seen below:

This is the same Chris Hayes who’ll be speaking at CPAC?

    • BlueStateRepub

The same Chris Hayes that CPAC dumbly invited as a “prominent conservative.”

Hayes said he thought about it but turned them down.

  • BlueStateRepub

Hayes is one of the least offensive hosts at MSDNC. At least he avoids personal, strawman and ad hominem attacks. He is respectful of conservatives even when disagreeing with them. He runs a thoughtful show with serious discussion and without all the shouty talk-all-over-each-other stuff.

He’s a Lib and his guests are the usual assortment of Libs, but his show isn’t bad…FNC could use a right-leaning show like his.

My only knock on Hayes, aside from ideology, is that he often mistakes talkingreallyfast with intellectualism.

    • wwbdinct

Really? Greta doesn’ fit that requirement? Moron.

    • GTFOBigGovt

His show isn’t the least bit “better” than the others, he just doesn’t scream or say delusion stuff like Matthews of late in that histrionic medications needed type of way or go for the shock value like the idiot at 10 screaming out how proudly socialist he is.

Fox Van Susteren is MUCH more varied with her guests and everyone is rather NORMAL.Except when she used to have Wasserman-Shultz and her ilk on which, thankfully doesn’t happen anymore.

And a LARGE difference between Fox and MSNOBAMA is MSNOBAMA continues the cray-cray programming ALL DAY LONG with one delusional host after another while Fox doesn’t start the opinion programming until 5:00 you could say, even though they have a liberal on there. Actually more like 8 if you count OReilly or 9. So we have 3 shows you can call “opinion hosts” the entire day versus MSNOBAMA having ALL DAY AND NIGHT. And even Greta at 10 used to be very “balanced” until lately she cannot tolerate DC’s hypocrisy and corruption and she’s showing she’s annoyed so one could say she’s “attacking” the administration.

Especially with Obama this past year absolutely refusing to do anything other than push his transformation of America minus the fiscal crisis, and crusade against the GOP on taxes to plan for 2014,, while I still think she’s a Liberal. Ditto OReilly has been sucking up to Obama since day one and just since this past election has HAD IT and is ticked off.

      So. that leaves Hannity.

I don’t recall if Hayes is or isn’t “offensive” but I DO recall featuring obnoxious ideologues like Katrina Vanden Heuvel, and Harris-Perry on his panel so it’s much WORSE having to listen to the group regardless of “his” demeanor.

    • lainer51

      are there 2 Chris Hayes?

  • KBDaBear

    That’s mighty white of them

  • notenoughtime

Juvenile, snarky reporting has filled in all evening slots on MSNBC – intelligent conversations need not apply.

    • TocksNedlog

This has yet to be proven.

    • LightSabre

Talk about soda out the nose!!!!!!!!

  • JackD

Wow this is great! Chris Hayes is a hero…well maybe not a “hero” – I’m a little uncomfortable using that word about him.

  • kaycee

Chris Hayes style not to ‘rip out Dick Cheney’s heart &use as football=good. But he must take valium to stop talking breathlessly

  • Scott Carroll

What, MSNBC couldn’t find a Scandinavian albino to host the slot? They had to hire this dusky minority to fill it? Check his papers. With that swarthy complexion and a name like “Hayes” I bet he’s not even legal. Doing the jobs Americans just won’t do huh?

  • Tantalus XVI

Wonder twin powers activate! Form of Rachel Hayes… Chris Maddow! #juiceboxers

  • DavidKramer

Ahhhh, replacing one lefty loon with another lefty loon………..they are going to corner the market folks. Better watch out if they make a move on capital markets.

  • $26222150

Ms. NBC. I think that says it all.

  • Steve_J

If the story is about Chris Hayes why did you put up a picture of Rachel Maddow?

  • Axelgreaser

SHAKE-UP AT MSNBC!? Ed Schultz cancelled during the week and being moved to ‘Coveted 5pm Saturday spot seems the equivalency of the coffin being lowered into the ground (who watched anyway) and their slipping Chris Hayes quietly into the vacant Schultz spot almost sounds like ‘clean out your desk, Ed, you’re ‘almost fired.’ This is brave as the 4 people watching Schultz could become angered and pass on MSNBC altogether. Will MSNBC leave their dreary weekend prison shows, etc. and other blue ribbon programming intact? It’s always an amusing interlude as you channel surf to check MSNBC out and cluck your tongue in disgust as you continue searching. And how do you brag about replacing Ed Schultz if you’re Chris Hayes? You probably just keep the whole episode to yourself, even from a wife and just tell her when you leave the house everyday, “Err, I’m just gonna take the car in for an oil change dear. Or something.”

Can someone explain to me exactly what a “liberal intellectual” is? Because he wears glasses and has a socialist agenda, he’s an intellectual?

    • TocksNedlog

A ‘liberal intellectual’ is someone that possesses knowledge without wisdom. He/she is educated but is lacking in common sense. They value ideology over pragmatism, which is why they speak of changing the world rather than dealing with the reality of how things/people/systems actually work.

      • © Sponge

Thanks for clearing that up. I feel much better about the prime time lineup at MSNBC, then.

    • mike_in_kosovo

He can correctly spell 3 letter words more than 50% of the time.

  • TocksNedlog

    “Working class bluster”
