'For shame’: Donald Trump blasted by almost everybody for 'cheap shot' on John McCain [video]

It was only a matter of time before @realDonaldTrump imploded. His attack on John McCain for becoming a POW appears to be that moment.

At the Family Leadership Summit in Ames, Iowa, Donald Trump really stepped in it, even by Donald Trump standards:

Trump on McCain: "He's a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren't captured."

— David Catanese (@davecatanese) July 18, 2015

Wow. Trump tears into McCain in Iowa. “He’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured.”

— Philip Rucker (@PhilipRucker) July 18, 2015

Trump just said McCain is only a war hero because he was captured. "I like people that weren't captured." Gasps in the crowd.

Really? Yep. Here’s the video:

Trump’s comments received an across-the-board slamming:

If you told me in 08 that I'd be defending McCain from Trump on Twitter, I'd call you crazy. I'd also ask what Twitter was. But here we are.

After Donald Trump spends six years in a POW camp, he can weigh in on John McCain's service

— Gov. Bobby Jindal (@BobbyJindal) July 18, 2015

As a fellow veteran I respect @SenJohnMcCain because he volunteered to serve his country. I cannot say the same about Mr. @realDonaldTrump.

— Rick Perry (@GovernorPerry) July 18, 2015

.@SenJohnMcCain is an American hero, period.

— Rick Santorum (@RickSantorum) July 18, 2015

Trump is a complete and utter disgrace. An embarrassment to humanity. https://t.co/z49JWj9ITD

— Stephen Hayes (@stephenfhayes) July 18, 2015

I asked Trump if he's read any accounts of McCain's time in captivity: " It's irrelevant."

— Stephen Hayes (@stephenfhayes) July 18, 2015

No, @SenJohnMcCain is a hero because he put on the uniform and flew into danger in service to our nation. For shame. https://t.co/lz2wQlvyMV

— Ed Morrissey (@EdMorrissey) July 18, 2015

I'm also pretty pissed because Trump is making me defend John McCain. Dick. @rcjparry @exjon @20committee

.@ScottWalker while at event in Sioux City says he wants to be clear @SenJohnMcCain is an American hero

Donald Trump negotiated his way out of serving 4 times.
McCain was captured, had a chance to leave early, but stayed.

Trump is an assclown.

I'm trying to figure out if Trump is a better stalking horse for Republicans or Democrats… and I don't pretend to have the answer.

— Bob Owens (@bob_owens) July 18, 2015

And now Trump has an excuse to drop out before he has to file financial disclosure.https://t.co/66wEowMZm7

What should Trump do?

Advice to @realDonaldTrump: Apologize for this pronto. Otherwise beginning of end.

Not likely, from the sound of things:

Trump, asked if he'll apologize to McCain: "No."
