'Anti-capitalist' coffee shop in Toronto to close after one year in business

Here’s a feel-good story from Canada. The Anarchist, an “anti-capitalist” café and coffee shop with a “pay what you can” business model is closing down after a year in business. The operators know who’s to blame for their failure.

We’re honestly surprised they lasted a year.

The café offered drip coffee to customers with a “pay what you can” price tag while charging for other beverages like espresso and tea drinks as well as breakfast pastries to subsidize the lost revenue. It also allowed the public to use its restroom and hang out in the storefront without making a purchase. Despite its closure, shop owner Gabriel Sims-Fewer called his short-lived business endeavor “a huge success.” He ended his statement with a batch of expletives. “F–k the rich. F–k the police. F–k the state. F–k the colonial death camp we call ‘Canada,’” Sims-Fewer signed off.

Remember that awesome commune that was CHOP: the Capitol Hill Ongoing Protest in Seattle? Food was just supposed to magically appear for everyone. Well, they did start a tiny garden. Seattle’s socialist council member said a drive-by killing in the CHOP zone “highlights capitalism’s brutality.”

They needed to sell more anti-capitalist merchandise, like T-shirts and books.
