And speaking of exhausting, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth went for a run with troops in San Diego, and a clip is flying around with the groundbreaking observation that he is trailing the pack. That’s the scandal. That’s the whole thing.
A 46-year-old man who has not been on active duty in years did not dust a group of sailors and Marines whose actual job is to be faster, stronger, and meaner than a cabinet secretary on a Tuesday. I wish I were kidding.

If Hegseth were blowing past active-duty twenty-somethings on a group run, I would have questions about the standards, not a victory lap. The fact that he is out there at all, in the same frame, keeping up well enough that the only available dunk is “he’s behind the kids,” is the story.
These are the same people who spent years clapping for officials who treated a flight of stairs like an extreme sport. Pete is sweating with the crew that just got home from roughly 300 days at sea on the Lincoln, and the takeaway from the cheap seats is that he didn’t win the fun run. Not a word about why he was there. Not a word about the welcome. Just freeze-frame, crop, post, repeat.
Mouth-breathers. Every last one of them.
