I saw the photo and honestly had to stare at it for a second longer than I should have.
There it was — 'IS HE DEAD YET?' merch on display at the Texas Democrat Convention.
Not a protest sign someone slapped together in their garage, not a one-off edgy tweet. Actual convention swag. The kind of thing you’d expect to see at a gathering of people who are supposed to be serious about governing a state and a country.
It’s not clever. It’s not funny in that punching up' way they always claim their jokes are. It’s just crude, mean-spirited, and dripping with the kind of casual cruelty they love to accuse everyone else of. The same people who spent years screaming that any criticism of their side was “stochastic terrorism” or “dog whistles” are now openly selling death wishes like it’s a limited-edition drop.
I keep coming back to the hypocrisy because it’s so glaring it’s almost impressive. These are the folks who posture as the party of compassion, tolerance, and 'our democracy.' Yet when the target is someone they loathe - and we all know exactly who 'he' is - suddenly it’s fine to turn political disagreement into ghoulish merchandise. No lectures about civility. No hand-wringing from their media allies.
Just crickets or quiet approval.
What really gets me is how normalized this has become on their side. We’ve watched the rhetoric ratchet up for years: every conservative is a threat, every policy disagreement is existential, every opponent deserves not just defeat but erasure. Now it’s literal merch at a state party convention. That’s not fringe anymore. That’s the vibe they’re comfortable with in public.
As a happy warrior who still believes we can beat bad ideas with better ones, better candidates, and relentless truth-telling, this kind of stuff doesn’t scare me. It clarifies things. It shows exactly who we’re up against and why the contrast matters so much. They can keep printing the shirts. We’ll keep winning the arguments - and the elections.
