Bob Perry built a homebulding company, Perry Homes, from the ground up.
He was also a major patron of the Republican Party. Between 2000 and 2010, he gave $66 million to various candidates (mostly Republican) and political action committees. He continued to make donations in 2011 and 2012, including large contributions to pro-Mitt Romney political action committees.
Admirers took to Twitter this evening to pay their respects.
Texas lost a legend today. From school teacher to homebuilder, Bob Perry changed the world. God Bless. http://t.co/ar6Q3qBqXk

RIP Bob Perry, a man more generous to our cause than any other. His kindness and humility were so impressive considering his stature #txlege

Bob Perry knew that the purpose of life is to make it make a difference. I was truly honored to be one of the many he supported.
