Surrogates gone wild! Obama camp forced to clarify: Bill Clinton endorses Obama, not Romney

Another day, another Obama surrogate going off script. On Thursday, Bill Clinton praised Mitt Romney’s “sterling” business career and suggested Obama’s attacks on Bain were off the mark.

Uh oh. There might not be a Cory Booker-style hostage video in President Clinton’s future, but it’s definitely cleanup time. The Obama campaign actually distributed a CBS article (don’t call it a press release!) to clarify Clinton’s comments.

Clinton said his remarks got “twisted around.”

“I said, you know, Governor Romney had a good career in business and he was a governor, so he crosses the qualification threshold for him being president,” Clinton said. “But he shouldn’t be elected, because he is wrong on the economy and all these other issues.

That created quite the scoop for USA Today:

But for conservatives, Clinton’s remarks and the Obama camp’s damage control were yet another window into the campaign’s failures.

Romney spokesman told BuzzFeed:

If the Obama campaign needs to distance themselves from their own press release explaining Bill Clinton’s praise of Governor Romney’s ‘sterling’ business record, they’re really losing. At this point it’s just sad.
