Idiots? On the Internet? Say it ain’t so!
A rare winter storm paralyzed the unprepared Atlanta area yesterday and today, leading to nightmarish commutes, stranded residents and hazardous conditions on the roads. In response to reports of 911 overload, the Atlanta Police Department invited people to use the power of social media to reach out with reports of emergencies.

If you CAN'T get through to 911 please send a message to us through Facebook or Twitter.

For some, it turned out to be an effective use of social media.

Cute. Really freakin’ cute.
This being Twitter, plenty of people felt the need to reply to the police department’s tweet, clogging its Twitter mentions with oh-so-insightful commentary.

Smart thinking, guys.
Meanwhile, the Atlanta P.D. continues to reach out via Twitter and is now urging people to call 911 to report emergencies.
Out of 387 hazardous situations on the roadways we have resolved all but 19. We won't stop. No one is leaving work.
— Atlanta Police Department (@Atlanta_Police) January 29, 2014
Continue to call 911 for emergencies. If you are calling to report icy roads call 511.

In addition to contacting 911, you can check on loved ones by registering at the American Red Cross Safe and Well… http://t.co/t9s8jv0xVS
