The headline in the graphic Gov. DeSantis shares reads, "Even medical professionals are skipping health insurance because of high prices." That is a sobering reality and a commentary on the state of healthcare in 2026. Anyone who believes that super affordability comes from the federal government having intervened possesses an admirable amount of four-patriot gleam but not a sense of history and the way things operate.
Government does the people's business, but it does not do business with the people. Having the government play doctor qualifies as unwise from the outset. Medical services can and cannot, at the same time in different ways, be overseen and regulated in the manner that trade and commerce are. That leaves a mess. Healthcare costs are too high. Something must be done, but the wrong attempted solution will not solve anything while deepening the crater out of which we must all shovel. Affordability is a big part of it, but it is a symptom as much as a fundamental. Healthcare needs changing from head to toe, and out of that should come affordability. The federal government's responsibility should be to ensure that standards are maintained and that those in the medical field are held accountable for their practices.
