Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, the second-in-command for the Democrats in the U.S. Senate, thought it would be a good idea to bring the kids trapped in a cave in Thailand into a political argument about families being separated at the border.

What exactly is a “bureaucratic cave”?

It wasn’t as if he made an error in his statement. This was a planned tangent he chose to take that had nothing to do with the question asked by Chuck Todd.

If Durbin is going to attempt to score political points, why not just deliver a statement and let it stand alone? The need to incorporate those trapped in Thailand is very awkward and extremely insensitive.

Perhaps we have underestimated how desperate Democrats are for attention four months before the midterm elections.
Rep. Maxine Waters’ recent rhetoric is unjustifiable but somewhat understandable given her history of making commentary and her position. Durbin, however, is the Senate Minority Whip, which means he is one of the four most powerful Democrats in the nation. To make such an irresponsible comparison is not going to help his party’s cause at all.
