Apparently, we’ve been pronouncing Kiev all wrong:

You see, the Russians say “KEY-ev” while Ukrainians say “KEEV”:
Russians pronounce it KEY-ev. (Most Americans learned the pronunciation in the Soviet era.)
Ukrainians pronounce it KEEV.
