Rotherham update: Police commissioner resigns; alleged victim of sexual abuse arrested

It’s about time:

More from Sky News:

South Yorkshire Police Commissioner Shaun Wright has resigned after coming under pressure over the Rotherham child abuse scandal.

Mr Wright had resisted calls to step down from the Prime Minister and Home Secretary after a report found 1,400 children in the South Yorkshire town had been victims of child sexual exploitation since 1997.

He also endured a grilling from MPs and was confronted by relatives of abuse victims at an angry public meeting in Rotherham earlier this month, when he again refused to resign.

Mr Wright was councillor with responsibility for children’s services in the borough from 2005 to 2010, when Professor Alexis Jay’s report found officials failed to act to stop gangs of abusers.

And he takes “no responsibility” for what happened:

This is a good first step, but what comes next? Would you believe arresting the victims:

Here’s the headline from that Daily Mail piece. A “van load’ of police were needed:

Rotherham child-sex victim confronts her alleged abuser in the street… but SHE is arrested by a van load of police.

Even better. After they took her into custody:

She was ‘shoved into van’ by two officers in ‘thuggish’ arrest, witness says

The police:

[. . .] realised they had been hoping to interview her over claims

The alleged victim isn’t talking to the cops after her treatment, however.

Pro tip: if you’re in the police department and have been accused of turning a blind eye to sexual abuse because of nonsense pc sensibilities for over a decade, arresting the alleged victims is not the best way to win over the public you serve.
