Disgraced former CBS newsman Dan Rather is a really big fan of science:
Science. (That’s it. That’s the tweet. Pass it on).
— Dan Rather (@DanRather) October 29, 2020
As he keeps telling us:
Science is always an applause line I am happy to stand and salute.
— Dan Rather (@DanRather) November 8, 2020
Over. And over. And over again:
COVID is contagious. Masks help. A lot. Social distancing too. Washing hands. Who knew? (Checks notes) ANYONE paying attention to science.
— Dan Rather (@DanRather) December 8, 2020
Until we get to outdoor mask usage, that is, and then the science doesn’t matter:
I’m confused. Why should people care if someone wants to wear a mask outside?
— Dan Rather (@DanRather) May 12, 2021
Well, the reason we care is that the CDC has been overstating the threat from outdoor transmission since this pandemic began and these idiotic outdoor mask mandates have done incredible damage to our economy and to fighting COVID-19 in general because it caused people to rebel against all sorts of precautions:
Are masks really needed when walking around outdoors? It appears @CDCgov has greatly exaggerated the chances of outdoor transmission https://t.co/rX2M456nfV
— Steve Daniels (@stevedaniels27) May 11, 2021
And right now the CDC’s messaging is still all over the place with experts questioning it all:
“The notion that children should wear masks outdoors all day in the heat of July, or that they can’t play any sport that involves physical contact, or put an arm around a friend" strikes many experts as dubious. https://t.co/fo9fZBn9hu

So, yes, we SHOULD care about why people are still wearing masks outside because the inside mask debate is long overdue:
"I think we can do it right around now," @ScottGottliebMD says on lifting indoor mask mandates. pic.twitter.com/weVu2jTo0q

And as for Rather’s track record, maybe he should just still it all out anyway:
Texas lifting COVID restrictions pains me deeply. A distraction from deadly winter storms, it will likely be popular. But best science says it's far too soon. We're so close. Vaccines bring hope. Hope. Remember that? Can we please not spike footballs before we hit the end zone?

Any comment on what happened since that tweet, Dan?
51 days after texas lifted its mask mandate, the seven-day average of daily deaths is at its lowest point in 10 months https://t.co/P451Z9icah pic.twitter.com/j50NRlC7Mb

And:
daily average cases in texas are under 2,500 for the first time since mid-june 2020 and deaths are at their lowest point since early july 2020 https://t.co/P451Z9icah pic.twitter.com/FasddCzMOJ
