Well, the first bombshell just dropped in the ongoing impeachment hearing, and we’re not sure blue-check Twitter is ready for it. . .
Apparently, we’ve been pronouncing Kiev all wrong:
The first thing I've learned so far during the #ImpeachmentHearings is that 'Kiev' is apparently pronounced' KEEV?!

Listen here:
Kent: "Over the course of 2018 and 2019, I became increasingly aware of an effort by Rudy Giuliani and others, including his associates Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman, to run a campaign to smear Amb. Yovanovitch & other officials at the U.S. Embassy in Kiev." https://t.co/Tbcm4X2OaU pic.twitter.com/6r3mzFJgbJ

You mean to tell us all the expert blue-checks were in the dark on this?
Wait, "Kiev" is pronounced like "Keev"? Had no idea
— Joe Light (@joelight) November 13, 2019
I think primarily what we're learning today is that we've been mispronouncing "Kiev" since at least the 80s.

Anyone else learn how to pronounce Kiev today or just me
— jess mcintosh (@jess_mc) November 13, 2019
I’ve already learned that I’ve been saying “Kiev” wrong. #ImpeachmentHearings

What have you learned from the impeachment hearings so far?
I've learned that I've been pronouncing Kiev wrong my whole life.
— Mitch Goldich (@mitchgoldich) November 13, 2019
I’ve learned we’ve been pronouncing Kiev wrong all this time.

You see, the Russians say “KEY-ev” while Ukrainians say “KEEV”:
Russians pronounce it KEY-ev. (Most Americans learned the pronunciation in the Soviet era.)
Ukrainians pronounce it KEEV.
It's a matter of Ukrainian patriotism to reject the Russian pronunciation. https://t.co/zliAMgFjRQ

WSJ readers already know this, however:
The WSJ changed our official style guide to "Kyiv" from "Kiev" for exactly this reason https://t.co/bpFUvKddbS

Mission accomplished:
One thing is already clear: millions of Americans will gain critical insight from these proceedings into how to pronounce "Kiev" correctly, and to drop "the" from "Ukraine." #progress

But it’s still Chicken KEY-ev for some reason:
