As we told you, the local news sites Gothamist and DNAinfo were shut down this week after billionaire owner Tom Ricketts pulled the plus on his multi-year money-losing experiment. Liberals are furious at the notion that a billionaire wouldn’t keep funding the sites despite the losses, but Twitchy regular Bethany Mandel has a brutal truth bomb on why Gothamist and DNAinfo are no more.
In short, they “weren’t particularly good at their jobs”:
My unpopular opinion: I'm team Ricketts. His staff weren't particularly good at jobs, & they made it more $$$ & annoying to employ them.

She goes on to explain:
I followed Gothamist coverage for years. I wrote about how they cared more about being PC than doing their jobs: https://t.co/mejm9dAU8y

They whipped up a lot of anti-Semitism in their coverage of Jewish New Yorkers, especially those in Brooklyn (@Mottel has many examples)
— Bethany S. Mandel (@bethanyshondark) November 3, 2017
But when Donald Trump was elected they suddenly saw a political incentive to care about anti-Semitism, which had been in NYC all along.

I criticized a lot of this coverage, as I do with many other media outlets. Gothamist editors were unique in their not giving a shit.
— Bethany S. Mandel (@bethanyshondark) November 3, 2017
They cared more about spreading their narrative, even if false or misleading, than actually covering NYC in a meaningful and fair way.

I stopped reading it. I can get my propaganda anywhere these days. Might as well get better written propaganda from national reporters.

Local news is dying and that is indeed a problem. But Gothamist was not the answer to the problem.

If you want more local news, open a site. Pay for it yourself. You're not entitled to someone else's money. Yes even if they have a lot.

Well said.
