Update on Andrew Tahmooressi, the Marine held in Mexico

Good news. Congress will finally hold a hearing to discuss Andrew Tahmooressi, the veteran U.S. Marine currently held in a Mexican jail on a variety of charges. From the San Diego Union Tribune:

Rep. Ed Royce, R-Fullerton, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, together with Rep. Matt Salmon, R-Ariz., chairman of the Western Hemisphere Subcommittee, announced Friday that the hearing, entitled “Sergeant Andrew Tahmooressi: Our Marine in Mexican Custody,” has been scheduled for Oct. 1 at the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington, D.C.

Tahmooressi has been behind bars in Baja California since March 31, after driving into the El Chaparral border crossing in Tijuana with all of his possessions, including three loaded firearms and 400 rounds of ammunition. Tahmooressi has said he had not intended to drive into Mexico, and was unable to turn around.

In a statement, the congressmen stressed that Tahmooressi, who served two tours of duty in Afghanistan and received an honorable discharge in 2012, had been under treatment for PTSD at the time of his arrest.

Former Marine Montel Williams, who has been a vocal advocate for Tahmooressi’s release, will be one of the witnesses called by the panel:

But aside from Williams and the segment he did with Greta Van Susteren on Friday, there’s not much coverage in the media on Tahmooressi whatsoever. Hopefully the hearing on October 1 helps get this story the coverage it deserves.
