We’ve been long warned that unverified Twitter accounts might be purveyors of misinformation. Perhaps there’s some truth in the claim because MSNBC ‘journalist’ Mehdi Hasan has been without his blue check for mere days and is spreading false information.
Just kidding. Mehdi would have likely fallen for this, blue check or not.
One might think the updated hateful conduct policy being reported by user @UsingCigarettes might have been Mehdi’s first clue, but no.
Free speech champion Elon Musk. https://t.co/iKB2FGGvR8

The phony screenshot claimed that the policy was updated in April 2023 to prohibit direct attacks on people on the basis of their ‘Twitter Blue status’.
Mehdi Hasan, like many others, has been ranting about people, himself included, losing their blue checks.
He was apparently so upset about the loss of his blue badge that he couldn’t spare 30 seconds to pull up the current Hateful Conduct policy directly from Twitter to verify:
‘You may not directly attack other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, caste, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or serious disease.’

Right?! LOL.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
— Rex Chapman🏇🏼 (@RexChapman) April 22, 2023
Unfortunately, gullible people believe tweets from journalists like Mehdi Hasan who are tied to a well-known outlet like MSNBC.
Rex here is not laughing at Mehdi, even though he should be. He retweeted it (face palm).

Charlie Kirk should take note.

Clearly, Mehdi Hasan was not alone. Weissman fell for it too. A lot of people did.
Karma strikes. This time in @mtaibbi's favour.

The worst part is that it was so easily preventable.
Based on this Tweet, there is a 100% chance you believed that the Ghost of Kyiv was real and this is what he looked like. pic.twitter.com/s0sntXJmO9

LOLOLOL!
You're inching your way to the top of the list, Mehdi.https://t.co/bcSfwtgIQO
— Eric Spencer (@JustEric) April 22, 2023
Keep going, Mehdi! You’re almost there.
Mehdi, unsurprisingly, fell for a fake post about a change to the hateful conduct policy because he’s too lazy to check if the nonsense he spreads has any basis in reality. https://t.co/YwLfXvawh8
— AG (@AGHamilton29) April 22, 2023
‘Unsurprisingly’. There’s a bit of a track record here.
In Mehdi Hasan’s defense, the fake post did come from the ultra-reliable source, @UsingCigarettes.
(@UsingCigarettes is a left wing account that trolls with fake tweets like this one.)
DUDE! It’s says SATIRE in his bio! You people in the media NEED to lose your blue check for NOT being a real “journalist” 🙄
— SeldenGADawgs (@SeldenGADawgs) April 22, 2023
That’s the real kicker. The blue check was touted by many as a sign that the tweeter could be trusted, but it never lived up to that hype.
This account had ‘satire’ in their bio (it doesn’t any longer), and Mehdi still thought it was real.
False information was flowing freely from the formerly checked, long before Elon Musk came along.
Peak journalism is when you don’t even take 10 seconds to confirm easily verifiable information
— dylan (@_wheels) April 22, 2023
That’s how they roll, way too often. Emotion first. Journalism … maybe sometime?
Mehdi fell for a troll post. Cry more about how you’re a serious journalist. https://t.co/lB4I8LFDbV pic.twitter.com/paqh88cYn6

They hate Elon Musk. They probably can’t even articulate why.
They are primed to be duped by misinformation about Musk because they want to believe it.
This is fake.
Probably the one time you should have plagiarized someone else rather than posting this nonsense. https://t.co/qhrCs5u38R

You know you’ve messed up when The List is in your mentions.

Why do people lack trust in journalism these days? No, it’s not because Donald Trump told them to. Distrust of media predates Donald Trump.
‘Journalists’ like Mehdi Hasan helped bring us here.
So my verified mentions are now just full of people who paid Musk his 8 bucks and I can’t actually see mentions from the people I used to see – journalists, activists, politicians, authors, public figures, etc.
What a wonderful user experience (!)
— Mehdi Hasan (@mehdirhasan) April 21, 2023
Maybe not being able to see the journalists isn’t such a bad thing after all?
