It all started with discussion over an op-ed written by Democrat Rep. Eric Swalwell of California earlier this year, where he wrote that it’s necessary to “ban assault weapons, buy them back, go after resisters,” among other things:
Make no mistake, Democrats want to eradicate the Second Amendment, ban and seize all guns, and have all power rest with the state.
These people are dangerously obsessed with power. https://t.co/f1AS6Me0ko

Rep. Swalwell, who might run for the Democrats’ 2020 presidential nomination, then chimed in with this reminder for those who won’t give up their #2A rights — dare we call it a “threat”:
And it would be a short war my friend. The government has nukes. Too many of them. But they’re legit. I’m sure if we talked we could find common ground to protect our families and communities.
— Rep. Eric Swalwell (@RepSwalwell) November 16, 2018
Well, there it is.
Liberals are prepared to use nuclear weapons on Americans if we won't surrender our Second Amendment rights. https://t.co/Xhy6rTHkeE

Yikes! But Swalwell later claimed that anybody reading it that way is being overdramatic:
So our government would nuke its own country in order to take guns? Wow
— Joe Biggs (@Rambobiggs) November 16, 2018
Don’t be so dramatic. You claiming you need a gun to protect yourself against the government is ludicrous. But you seem like a reasonable person. If an assault weapons ban happens, I’m sure you’ll follow law.
— Rep. Eric Swalwell (@RepSwalwell) November 16, 2018
The problem is the people who DON’T and WON’T follow the law, but Swalwell probably already knows that, and he’s hearing about it:
The government can't round up 30 million illegal aliens for deportation but they're going to round up 100+ million American citizens? Sure.

Personally, I have a bigger problem with an elected official blithely talking about nuking his fellow Americans than my neighbor owning an AR-15. But YMMV. https://t.co/yfiRAeuCn3

This is Congressman Swalwell suggesting that the government would use nuclear weapons to win an armed conflict over gun ownership. https://t.co/JOVSE3vxm7

Democrat Congressman Eric Swalwell threatens to nuke US citizens to own the cons or something, no idea how he got himself into this rabbit hole.
This guy is effing nuts and you pay him. https://t.co/Jl0pcp5y3t

Your 2020 campaign ended before it began

We can already envision “Just obey because I’ll have nukes” on a Swalwell 2020 bumper sticker. Good luck with that.
