ThinkProgress relayed a “news” report that claimed Rep. Michele Bachmann was calling for illegal immigrant children at the border to be put in “labor camps,” or “Americanization facilities” as Bachmann was quoted as saying.
Just one problem: None of it was true. ThinkProgress eventually issued a “correction,” and Jonah Goldberg was impressed by its scope:
Now that's a correction http://t.co/RjMXtAHjob (h/t @mt_newman)
— Jonah Goldberg (@JonahDispatch) July 27, 2014
The ThinkProgress post now consists of a brief “correction” saying Bachmann “never made the statement” followed by a several hundred word “story” that has been completely lined out.
@JonahNRO @mt_newman Correction? I don't think it means what they think it means…(retraction maybe)
— WindsTale (@Ontariobreeze) July 27, 2014
@grantbosse @JonahNRO I know, right? They use term "correction" as if they made a typo.
— Newman (@mt_newman) July 27, 2014
@JonahNRO @mt_newman The term is "Retraction". It sometimes comes with an apology and an explanation
— Grant Bosse (@grantbosse) July 27, 2014
@JonahNRO Sadly, professional "analysts" completely bought it and trashed Bachmann all over my TL.

The ThinkProgress “correction” was spotted by many others:

@hboulware I think they may have secretly liked the idea. Camps and socialism go hand in hand. @NoahCRothman

Crooks and Liars and the Daily Kos are two other liberal websites that have cited the fake story, according to the Daily Caller.
What might the excuse be?
@Ontariobreeze @JonahNRO the scariest part though R the comments below. Common excuse: "well, she's so dumb she could have said it!"

Ding! Ding! Ding!
Crazy racist Bachmann story so believable liberal websites fall for parody http://t.co/AEZ9i6hyFZ
