Just once we’d like to write a post about a journalism professor that wasn’t based on ridicule, but here we are once again. Jeff Jarvis of the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at the City University of New York happened to flip past “AMJoy” on MSNBC and decided this is what cable news should look like.

To be perfectly honest, we were in total disagreement at first because the screenshot shows just what we need less of on cable news shows; that is, the screen split into tiny boxes to accommodate 15 different pundits all talking at the same time from different locations.
Guess we weren’t woke enough to realize what he actually meant.
I’d suggest doubling to 10-people in little boxes. At minimum two guests have to have mic problems & another two can’t wait their turn & MUST talk over everyone else. I’d also suggest cutting segments in half for important topics. Something big can be solved in 120-180 seconds

I agree! It's a fantastic layout! Too many times news shows try to bunch up their guests into a single row on the tv, so you just get these little slices. This layout gives a more relaxed feeling and it's probably much easier to follow along with each speaker! Good job MSNBC!

Oh, he means more black commentators. If we saw everything in terms of race we would have picked up on that right away.
Usually I’m just listening to the news shows while I browse the Internet or something. Why would I care what the show *looks* like when I’m not even looking at the tv? I watch the news for information, not aesthetics.

That is actually one of the more racially homogeneous panels I've seen on cable news in recent years.
Not sure why race would be the variable to consider if your real interest is viewpoint diversity though. Equating the two seems a bit counterintuitive.

The question isn’t what they look like, they question is what kind of diversity of ideas are they presenting. If they all sound the same, parroting the same thing, while excluding different opinions, then the show isn’t a good one.
