"We need a socialist revolution now … for the animals": This thread has more than 350,000 likes

This thread caught our eye Saturday, but we put in on the back burner as news of Sen. John McCain’s death hit. Imagine our horror, then, to peek at it again Monday and find out that, since Friday, it’s racked up more than 100,000 retweets and 350,000 likes.

We usually stick to the blue-checks, but @socialistmic, who describes herself in her Twitter bio as a “bisexual vegan communist,” has really inspired a movement on social media with her demand for socialism now. Who knew the first word of the new socialist manifesto would be tampons?

tampons & pads should be free for everyone. food should be free for everyone. clean water should be free for everyone. access to shelter should be free for everyone. healthcare should be free for everyone. BASIC NECESSITIES SHOULD NOT BE COMMODIFIED, and fuck you if you disagree.

there are plenty of homes in the us that are unoccupied & there is plenty of food, clean water, clothing & sanitary items for everyone. capitalism literally overproduces these products but many of them are purposefully destroyed when they are not sold

we could so easily pay for everyone to have their basic needs met but yet the majority of the us budget gets spent on bailing out billionaires and murdering people for the purpose of extracting oil and colonizing them under the guise of “spreading democracy”

Sure many people would be content with having their basic needs met. But a lot of us have hobbies to support so there's still some incentive to work.

Having a hobby doesn’t help the economy though does it?yeah capitalism isn’t totally fair but those who work hard will achieve big things, there are people who can’t afford basic necessities because they didn’t or won’t work hard to get them, which is the most fair it can be

There should be these things available for people who can’t afford it. Not everyone. People who have money for it can pay, people who don’t should have access to these things for a lower cost or free.
