This thread caught our eye Saturday, but we put in on the back burner as news of Sen. John McCain’s death hit. Imagine our horror, then, to peek at it again Monday and find out that, since Friday, it’s racked up more than 100,000 retweets and 350,000 likes.
We usually stick to the blue-checks, but @socialistmic, who describes herself in her Twitter bio as a “bisexual vegan communist,” has really inspired a movement on social media with her demand for socialism now. Who knew the first word of the new socialist manifesto would be tampons?
tampons & pads should be free for everyone. food should be free for everyone. clean water should be free for everyone. access to shelter should be free for everyone. healthcare should be free for everyone. BASIC NECESSITIES SHOULD NOT BE COMMODIFIED, and fuck you if you disagree.

there are plenty of homes in the us that are unoccupied & there is plenty of food, clean water, clothing & sanitary items for everyone. capitalism literally overproduces these products but many of them are purposefully destroyed when they are not sold
— death to us imperialism ?? (@socialistmic) August 24, 2018
instead of giving them away for free to people who actually need them these basic necessities are fucking destroyed!! another example of how capitalists literally hate poor people & thrive off of their suffering
— death to us imperialism ?? (@socialistmic) August 24, 2018
we could so easily pay for everyone to have their basic needs met but yet the majority of the us budget gets spent on bailing out billionaires and murdering people for the purpose of extracting oil and colonizing them under the guise of “spreading democracy”

these demands are not utopian, they have been implemented in many socialist countries as much as possible under crushing economic sanctions or even direct warfare from imperialist nations, namely the ushttps://t.co/VWBmVH4kNn

we need a socialist revolution now, for the planet, for the animals and most importantly for the survival of humanity.

There’s a little bit more to the thread — a call for donations to campaigns — but that pretty much wraps it up. And the likes are still piling up like donations to Peter Strzok’s GoFundMe account.
We knew from a recent poll that nearly 60 percent of Democrats feel good about socialism, and of course Democratic Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — who hasn’t even been elected yet — is the next Barack Obama. Are we really doing this?
Conservatives might be fighting to hold back more than a blue wave if this trend continues.
Scarcity: How does it work?

Lmfao. This is incredibly stupid.
— Antonio Martinez (@djtechchicago) August 26, 2018
Best get your hand in your pocket then and get paying, you’re so disconnected from reality it’s funny, how things ‘should’ be and how things actually are in a world with multiple billions of people are different things entirely, communism is a total myth that will never ever work
— Ryan. (@Ryan_Green123) August 25, 2018
capitalism is literally killing both the planet and humanity at a breakneck pace but yeah it's communism that'll never work
— Scott Surette (@scottsurette) August 25, 2018
Capitalism is the only system that ever worked. Capitalism encourages innovation and has increased the quality of life for everyone. Capitalism gives you the ability to be a smug socialist with zero consequences on social media.

Well said. We’ll miss capitalism.

I mean you're already feeding and housing a massive prison population. Those silly law abides should just steal a few cars. :p
Sure many people would be content with having their basic needs met. But a lot of us have hobbies to support so there's still some incentive to work.
— Elf?? (@theelfiestelf) August 26, 2018
“A lot of us have hobbies to support.” Pro tip: Selling your homemade crap on Etsy is capitalism, and if you took out college loans to major in puppeteering, that’s on you.
Having a hobby doesn’t help the economy though does it?yeah capitalism isn’t totally fair but those who work hard will achieve big things, there are people who can’t afford basic necessities because they didn’t or won’t work hard to get them, which is the most fair it can be
— ?????? (@connor_swif7) August 26, 2018
There should be these things available for people who can’t afford it. Not everyone. People who have money for it can pay, people who don’t should have access to these things for a lower cost or free.

Where is this socialist utopia of which you speak?
Move there.

How about we start a GoFundMe for the plane ticket?
