International trolling: Russian Foreign Ministry's #FreeMariaButina hashtag gets hijacked

As Twitchy reported Monday, Russian national Maria Butina was arrested over the weekend on charges of conspiracy and accused of “infiltrating organizations having influence in American politics, for the purpose of advancing the interests of the Russian Federation.”

On Thursday, the official Twitter account of Russia’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs changed its profile picture to a photo and the hashtag, #FreeMariaButina.

It turns out that plenty of patriotic American citizens did their best to send #FreeMariaButina trending, riffing on the fact that a few Twitter blue-checks on Monday began passing around a photo of Butina — a Russian spy — in the Oval Office with Donald Trump! The only problem being, of course, that the woman pictured wasn’t Butina but an NSC staffer. Oops.

Singer may never live down that mistake, because people are still “mistaking” every redhead they see for Butina. OK, which of you pro journalists can pick out the real Maria Butina?
