Lena Dunham, perhaps visiting Oklahoma, warns that women are not safe there

Lena Dunham, who announced last fall that Twitter, populated as it is by “deranged neo-cons” “really, truly wasn’t a safe space” for her, tersely warned women this week that Oklahoma is not a safe space for them, thanks to a bill that would make performing an abortion a felony except when necessary to preserve the life of the mother.

Although the bill passed Oklahoma’s legislature, it was vetoed by Republican Gov. Mary Fallin, who explained that the bill’s language was too vague and therefore unable to withstand a “criminal constitutional legal challenge.” CNN nevertheless described Fallin not as pro-life but “anti-abortion rights,” so we’re not holding our breath waiting for Dunham to tweet her thanks. She’s probably retreated back to her safe space and hasn’t heard the news.

Others thought her tweet might be a caution about Dunham herself, who wrote in her critically lauded book about being a “weird 7-year-old” who did with her even younger sister “anything a sexual predator might do to woo a small suburban girl,” including masturbating while in bed next to her, prying open her vagina, and worse.

Later she told Time that her use of the term sexual predator was “comic,” so maybe these tweets about molestation will be good for a laugh too.

All of these deranged neo-cons need a reminder of what’s healthy and normal:

Hillary Clinton, a self-professed champion of women who have been sexually assaulted, has enlisted Dunham to campaign for her, so she couldn’t have done anything too awful.

The warning stands, though. If the twisters in Oklahoma don’t get you, maybe a “mustachioed campus Republican” in purple cowboy boots will.
