Counter-protesters arrive at flag-burning event with their own flags, massive water guns

Our old friends Disarm NYPD — the collective whose aim is to establish “no-cop zones” and replace armed law enforcement with community conflict resolution bodies — had scheduled a flag burning for this evening in New York’s Fort Greene Park to rid themselves of “this symbol of oppression.”

While that symbol of oppression also represents freedom of speech, open fires in public parks are a no-no, and Fort Greene Park isn’t yet a no-cop zone.

Just a quick aside to Sen. Claire McCaskill, who recently alleged that radio host Rush Limbaugh had “equated” the American and Confederate flags when in reality he had predicted it wouldn’t be long before the Stars and Stripes were similarly targeted as a symbol of hate: Disarm NYPD posted on Facebook that it had originally planned to burn a Confederate flag, “a symbol of white supremacy, slavery, and Jim Crow. However, the Confederacy lost the war, but the American flag has unceasingly, from the first day it was ever hung, represented the exact same thing.”

It certainly represents something else to these counter-protesters.

Unfortunately, a small contingent did manage to set fire to a flag. Did anyone remember to bring a videocamera?
