NYC banning cars tonight. If you are driving NYPD will give you $350 ticket. Shutting the subways and commuter trains. We are locked in
— Ana Garcia (@AnaGNews) January 26, 2015
With a “snowicane” quickly approaching, it’s not surprising that New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has imposed an overnight travel ban in 13 counties, making it a misdemeanor to drive on the roads after 11 p.m. and imposing a fine of up to $300.
It is a misdemeanor to drive a car in New York state after 11 pm, says Andrew Cuomo. Because he writes law now.

@goliathmeadow doubtless. Doesn't make it any more infuriating
— John Podhoretz (@jpodhoretz) January 26, 2015
@jpodhoretz I was wondering about that, too. What gives him the legal right to do that?
— Moe Lane (@Ogiel23) (@moelane) January 26, 2015
@moelane @jpodhoretz Martial law!
— Wodeshed, Peep Derple (@Wodeshed) January 26, 2015
@jpodhoretz Who the hell does he think he is? #Obama?

What has surprised a large number of New Yorkers as well as commuters from other states is that the travel ban includes the subway, which will come to a “hard stop” at 11 p.m.
They don't even do this in DC! MT @CBSNews: NYC subway system will shut down completely at 11 p.m., says @NYGovCuomo http://t.co/OYMY0luyQF

@freddoso does it snow under ground?
— Blaidd Drwgbert (@getgoins) January 26, 2015
Recommended
@getgoins There are elevated trains. DC shut those segments down in 2010, but kept the rest open.
— David Freddoso (@freddoso) January 26, 2015
This closure has made Commentary editor John Podhoretz particularly cranky.
The amazing thing is that there have been NYC subways for more than 100 yrs and only lately have govs decided to stop them running in storms
— John Podhoretz (@jpodhoretz) January 26, 2015
@jpodhoretz It's infuriating. We're getting soft.
— Ben Smith (@BuzzFeedBen) January 26, 2015
@BuzzFeedBen hey, I didn't vote for him
— John Podhoretz (@jpodhoretz) January 26, 2015
@BuzzFeedBen @jpodhoretz Is it possible the subway was in better condition 70 years ago?
— Tom Gara (@tomgara) January 26, 2015
@tomgara @BuzzFeedBen how about, you know, 10 years ago?
— John Podhoretz (@jpodhoretz) January 26, 2015
@jefffrane @BuzzFeedBen amount spent by MTA on infrastructure improvements since 1982: $99 BILLION
— John Podhoretz (@jpodhoretz) January 26, 2015
It's not the Nanny State. It's the Hall Monitor State.
— John Podhoretz (@jpodhoretz) January 26, 2015
If you don't understand that these guys LOVE shutting down roads and trains and things because it demonstrates their power, you should now.
— John Podhoretz (@jpodhoretz) January 26, 2015
Notable: at noon #MTA chairman said "very high" confidence subways could run through the storm. at 4:45pm @NYGovCuomo said no. #NBC4NY
— Andrew Siff (@andrewsiff4NY) January 26, 2015
Of course subways could run through the storm. THEY'VE RUN THROUGH STORMS FOR A CENTURY, CUOMO, YOU JERK.

"Time for some transportation problems in NYC."
— John Podhoretz (@jpodhoretz) January 26, 2015
There’s a first time for everything.
MTA chair says this is the 1st full-scale subway shutdown due to snow in history. Have been shutdowns for other extreme weather, like Sandy.
— Matt Flegenheimer (@mattfleg) January 26, 2015
When's the last time the subway was shut down outside of a flooding situation? This is not a good idea.

Subway shut down, vehicles banned. By tomorrow, I fully expect to be like Will Smith in "I Am Legend" #NYC #blizzard pic.twitter.com/1O2PfpsWHZ
