He might have recently been censured by his own party for his “long and terrible record of drafting, co-sponsoring and voting for legislation best associated with liberal Democrats,” but Arizona Sen. John McCain wants you to know he still knows pork when he smells it.
The Senate on Thursday voted 72-26 to pass the $1 trillion, 12-part omnibus spending bill, which will fund the government through the end of September. It will also fund what McCain is calling his top ten examples of pork barrel spending. Drum roll, please.
10. $15 mil for “incentive program” directing DoD to overpay on contracts by additional 5% if contractor is native #Hawaiian-owned company

9. $80 mil in additional funding for #Amtrak which operates in the red year after year

8. Multiple protectionist “Buy America” provisions hurting competition & innovation, driving up costs of gov’t procurement

7. $10 mil for USDA High Energy Cost Grants program subsidizing electricity bills in #Alaska & #Hawaii

2. Includes $15 mil/yr USDA office for #catfish inspection – which FDA already does – called wasteful & duplicative by GAO

And our top example of pork:
1. $600K for program at #Mississippi State University to research how to grow trees faster
— John McCain (@SenJohnMcCain) January 16, 2014
If we could eliminate every one of these wasteful programs, we could realistically cut the spending bill down to a little bit less than $1.012 trillion.
