Principal says as district employee he can't say the Holocaust (or slavery) was a 'factual, historical event'

The tweet that kicks off this thread seems like more of the same anti-Semitism coming from the Left, but if you read the Yahoo News story that goes along with it, it’s actually an indictment of an entire school district’s ability to teach history. In other words, it’s worse than it sounds.

So how did this come about? The mother of a student wrote to the school and asked how the Holocaust was going to be prioritized as part of the teaching of World War II, and the principal answered that Holocaust education would not be “forced on” any individuals. Yahoo News reports:

That mother, who did not want the newspaper to publish her name, reportedly told [Princial William] Latson, “The Holocaust is a factual, historical event. It is not a right or a belief.”

However, the principal insisted, “Not everyone believes the Holocaust happened and you have your thoughts but we are a public school and not all of our parents have the same beliefs so they will react differently, my thoughts or beliefs have nothing to do with this because I am a public servant. I have the role to be politically neutral but support all groups in the school…”

He added, “I can’t say the Holocaust is a factual, historical event because I am not in a position to do so as a school district employee.” Latson says his philosophy remains the same for slavery.

So what is it you say you do there at the school? Because it’s not teaching history.

Latson was not disciplined for his comments, which Deputy Schools Superintendent Keith Oswald excused as “a hastily, poorly written email that he apologized for.”

Serious question: Just how “hastily” was this email composed that it was so “poorly written”? And why did he blame his inability to acknowledge the Holocaust on his being a district employee?
