It’s pretty clear from reading his advice column in The New York Times Thursday that Philip Galanes was joking about drugging the meal this Thanksgiving. “I assume you’ve considered (and rejected, for your own good reasons) the obvious solution here: Make the stuffing with chestnuts and Xanax, and turn down the heat on your holiday,” he advises.
Someone working social media at the Times doesn’t understand the importance of context:

Oops. In other news, rapper and YouTube star Lil Peep, 21, was found dead Wednesday night, most likely from an overdose of Xanax.

Even without that context, it’s still a bad, bad tweet.

Why is the NYT suggesting I drug my family? https://t.co/gFLnNAzOFc

Drugging people at your holiday meal is not a good way to go. NYT has gone from dumb food suggestions to joking about committing crimes.
Also, why are your Thanksgivings so terrible? Stop being so dramatic and don’t go home if you are going to need therapy afterwards. https://t.co/kJgrbtfINF

As America hurtles thru another drug crisis here is The NY Times with excellent advice ??? https://t.co/7eUzg0LXai

So, the overdose epidemic is bad enough to drive pain patients to despair, but not bad enough for the NYT to stop making drug abuse jokes? Fyi: Benzos are a big driver of the problem. https://t.co/gc9XazIDNh

Just a casual article about drugging your family with pharmaceuticals. Might as well throw some magic mushies in the gravy. https://t.co/2uQQJjYb0g

Yeah sorry @nytimes I love you but substance abuse is not a joking matter, even if you didn't mean it that way. https://t.co/EA1OIiu7v8

I love when substance abuse is joked about by one of the biggest media outlets in our country https://t.co/kf4zgftwzL

I have tried to begrudgingly defend the Old Grey Lady (for posterity’s sake), but this miserable piece is officially the disgraceful end. What a damned shame. https://t.co/ykQlXaY4pX
