To get it out of the way immediately: Yes, some reports say that neighbors have said they heard “Islamist slogans” before the attack, but authorities have not confirmed it. Nevertheless, this is another horrifying story of violence that, regardless of motive, adds further injury to a country that recently suffered its own unspeakable terror attack.

What is know so far is that a 42-year-old French police officer, out of uniform and returning to his home in the Paris suburb of Magnanville, was killed in a knife attack, reportedly stabbed 9 times in the abdomen. His wife and child are reportedly being held hostage inside their home.

The U.K.-based Independent is just now reporting that the suspect has been shot and killed. Unfortunately, the paper is also reporting that the man’s wife, also a police officer, was killed:

Two married French police officers have been killed in separate knife attacks by an unknown assailant, who has now been shot dead by police after a tense stand off.

A small boy, 3, was caught up in the hostage situation which followed but was later rescued by police.

The Guardian is reporting the same:

A spokesman for France’s interior minister said a police officer, his wife and their attacker had been killed after a stabbing at the officer’s home outside Paris. The spokesman, Pierre-Henry Brandet, said on Monday night that police had managed to rescue a child from the scene.

Twitchy will update this post with additional details as they become available.

… and here we go. Are you sitting down?

ITV News reports:

A man pledging allegiance to so-called Islamic State has stabbed a French police commander to death outside his home.

He also took the officer’s partner and their three-year-old son hostage in their home in Magnanville, near Paris.

The attacker — who was reportedly shouting “Allahu akbar” (God is greater) — was shot dead by armed officers when they stormed the property.

The police officer’s partner was found dead but the child survived.

Islamic State’s Amaq news agency said one of the group’s fighters was responsible for the killing.

French prosecutors have launched an anti-terror investigation, according to AFP news agency.

Francois Hollande, the French president, condemned the “odious act” and announced that he would hold a meeting about the incident on Tuesday.

Speaking of President Hollande and ISIS, remember that crazy, unexplained technological glitch that caused audio of the words “Islamist terrorism” to drop out of the White House’s video of his meeting with President Obama? That was weird.
