VIP: A Day in the Life of a Twitchy Freelancer During Campaign Season

ImgFlip

HAAAAYYY Twitchy VIP members! We have a treat for you. You are going to get a little peek behind the curtain of what it is like to be a TWITCHY Freelancer during a campaign season. I can tell you are all sitting on the edge of your seats and about to burst from the anticipation.

I am Angie. I have been writing with Twitchy since August of 2022. WOW. Even I did not realize it had been that long until I went to find the date for this piece. If you don't know me by now, I tend to pick stories that make me laugh, I do throw in some normal points and laugh at the Left stories too, but basically, I tend to be the weird or funny story person. BUT in an election season that changes up a bit.

Being a freelancer is different than being a full-time staff writer. The full-time writers are Sam, Doug, and Brett and they kick butt every day! As a freelancer, we can choose when we write, there are no set hours, which is why you will often see a 2 am or 3 am post from some of us complete insomniac weirdos like me.

I once had a comment on one of my stories that said something along the lines of COME ON YOU WRITE FOR A LIVING because I had a typo. Actually, a lot of the freelancers do NOT write for a living, we all usually have full-time jobs and families and obligations that have nothing to do with writing and we got into writing for TWITCHY specifically because we want to make a difference in the culture and point out lies from the Left while having some fun and not being stuck writing something stupid and boring or being assigned what to write.

So let me tell you how it works. Once you get brought on as a freelancer, you get some training, and you have a certain amount of time where an editor checks all of your stories before they get published and after a bit, you are kicked out of the editor's nest and you are all on your own. If you make a mistake that is all yours. It is not anybody else's fault. You have to check for your typos, you have to check your sources, and you are responsible for all of the opinions you write. Our managing editor also writes and there are a ton of us writing, posting, and publishing at all hours 24 hours a day 7 days a week, so she can not possibly look at all of our stories. She does see a lot of them. She works her butt off. I can not tell you how many times she saved a mess from being published. Still, anything we write is all on us.

We are not told about what to write. We have some guidelines about not using certain profanity and Twitchy is obviously a conservative media site so if you decided to be a Leftist one day and kept writing about Lefty politics, they might talk to you about changing jobs, but in general, we get to choose our subjects and what we write about them. We choose our own posts to put in the articles. Nobody says you can never use this person in your piece or you HAVE to use this big follower account. We choose all of that on our own.

Throughout the day we are on and off X (Twitter). When we find a post we want to write about we have to go into the writing application and see if anyone else already has it. We have a lot of writers so the chances you get the story you want to write are like 60 /40 with the 40 being you get it. I am telling you people are fast. You can see a post that was just posted 3 minutes ago and someone will already have the headline saved and you feel sad but you get happy pretty fast because HOW CAN YOU BE SAD ABOUT BEING ABLE TO MAKE FUN OF THE LEFT AND GET PAID FOR IT!

YES, we do get paid. It is not like we are making so much money we can stop our other job or in my case jobs, I have like 3 of them. LOL You reading and clicking our stuff helps us to get paid so THANK YOU for reading and clicking this one.

The scrambling for headlines during an election season is not as hard as when there is no election because things are happening so fast and so often it is easier to grab a story. Once we have the story headline saved and it is ours then we get to choose what tweets to include.  I have no set protocols for choosing 'tweets'. I simply scroll through the comments and the 'Quote Tweets' and if something makes me laugh or think or I find myself saying 'YASSS' out loud I tend to use the post, if I know the person or not is never a consideration for me. The post I picked could have been tweeted by a person with 10 followers who may hate me and I would never know. I really never look at the follower count, the bio, or other posts unless I am considering them for the main post of the article.

We try not to drag normal people as the main tweet in the articles. So if Joe Doe has 20 followers and is spewing some crazy Leftist nonsense he has no real danger of being featured on Twitchy, but if John Legend is being a pretentious little snot and spewing Lefty nonsense he has a 90% chance of getting dragged. Posts do not have to be about celebrities or politicians, and occasionally someone with say 20k or more followers who is not super well known may be a subject because their post went viral, but we tend to run that by our managing editor before we write it to be sure we are not dragging a regular person who just happens to have stupid ideas. :P

We also get to choose our cover image from a library in our writing application. If we can not find an image we like we can make our own. Sometimes picking the perfect image helps bring the story to just the right level of snark. It is one of my favorite parts of the story process.

Once we write the piece we then need to proofread it and check for all the problems. In my case, this is my biggest weakness. I transpose letters, I often write form instead of from and it drives me up a wall. I also read past typos. I read fluent typos as I say on X. I look past them because I just make them look right in my brain. I could use the help of a good programmer to create an ANGIE SPELL CHECK that looks for all of the typos I tend to make and fix them. haha

And there you go. Once we check it out and miss all of the typos (That is me only everyone else is fantastic) we hit publish and then we wait for the comments to tell us you all agree, you hate us or point out my typos. LOL! We do have a little DM where we all talk and if we see a problem or someone has a story that someone else already wrote we tell each other and we all get along well. Even though we compete a bit for stories we also drop tips in the chat if we are not writing or have no time to write it. It is a nice welcoming group.

We have one thing in common that helps us all get along. We ALL want the best for our country and we ALL want to fight Leftist ideology. Some of us do it with humor, some of us with explanations about the ins and outs of the law, and some of us with a little of both. But we ALL want to point out issues with the LEFT and amplify the voices of those who agree with us.

You guys are the best. I made some jokes about you hating us but most of you are the most supportive and wonderful people and I for one love reading your comments. I hope you enjoyed a small peek into what we do as freelancers and I hope to see more of your posts in my articles soon.

GO VOTE. Talk at least one other person into voting and FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!
