The Raw Story calls itself “a progressive news site that focuses on stories often ignored in the mainstream media.” But it apparently has a lot more in common with the mainstream media than it would care to admit. Namely, a penchant for ignoring facts.

A 3-year-old boy was killed when a pink handgun he and his 7-year-old sister were playing with went off. The Raw Story’s David Edwards saw this tragic death as a great opportunity to call attention to gun manufacturers’ attempts to appeal to women and children:

Pink handguns and Hello Kitty assault rifles have been part of an effort to get firearms in the hands of women and younger groups in recent years. In 2011, Arizona state Sen. Lori Klein (R) was criticized after she pointed her loaded raspberry-pink handgun at a reporter.

But in his haste to ghoulishly blame gun manufacturers, Edwards neglected to do his homework. You see, that “Hello Kitty assault rifles” hyperlink led to parody site does not actually sell weapons. A quick glance at the disclaimer would’ve saved Edwards some embarrassment:

NOTE: This site is a parody for humor purposes only. No actual weapons may be bought on this site. “Hello Kitty” is a trademark of Sanrio, Inc. You’re taking the wrong drugs if you think that Sanrio would ever license the use of Hello Kitty for a firearm or weapon of any sort.

Edwards — or one of his editors — eventually realized the mistake and swapped out the link for another one (naturally without using the word “correction”). Now, the hyperlink leads to a blog post showing a custom-made “Hello Kitty AR-15.” Yep. In late 2007, a man put together a Hello Kitty AR-15 for his wife — not for sale — to draw attention to California gun grabbers’ obsession with guns’ cosmetic features. The man was not a gun manufacturer, nor did he represent the firearms industry, yet The Raw Story insists that this blog post serves as irrefutable proof that  Hello Kitty assault rifles have been part of a concerted effort to push firearms into the hands of women

Rotten move, Raw Story.

I think I’d like a custom Grumpy Cat AR-15. Seems more fitting than Hello Kitty.

  • peteee363

i guess they were out of strawberry shortcake pistols, and my little pony shotguns?

    • Penny Robinson Fan Club

Wouldn’t “My Little Pony” horse pistols be more appropriate?

      • peteee363

well, strawberry shortcake was tripping over the shotgun, so she traded with my little pony for the pistols.

  • disqus_LASIg6epmj

        Old school yo.

  • Daniel Minardi

But firearms have been aggressively promoted to women. So, sure, their proof is wrong, but, whatever.

    • Angie (D)

“So, sure their proof is wrong, but, whatever.”

IOW: The ends justify the means.

FYI — That’s how the morally bankrupt operate.

      • Daniel Minardi

No, I’m saying, why does Twitchy care if Raw Story got a trivial fact wrong? Sure, it’s funny, but the fact of the matter is that gun manufacturers are targeting women and are trying to get youth interesting in the shooting sports. Take pride in that, don’t attack silly mistakes of idiots at Raw Story who point that out, just because they have some trivial underlying fact wrong that supports their TRUE statement that we have no reason to be ashamed of.

        • RogueRose

You’ve got your cause/effect backwards. Women want weapons that appeal to them and meet their needs. Gun manufacturers responded to the demands of the marketplace and started designing guns that appeal to women. Gotta love capitalism. Last I checked, the 2nd Amendment applies to all Americans, not just men.

          • Daniel Minardi

I’m not arguing cause/effect. Manufacturers try to open new markets. They’ve promoted gun ownership for women. There’s nothing wrong with that.

        • AdoEdem

Because “eh, one little fact doesn’t really matter” is a dangerous proposition. If they have a solid point to make (and they do, it’s just that we’ll have to agree to disagree on whether or not it’s a bad thing) their point is weakened by fudging on facts. It shows an intellectual sloppiness that, while somewhat par for the course as far as Raw Story is concerned, makes people question what else you (general you) couldn’t be arsed to take three minutes to Google.

That, and it just proves that the hoplophobics out there can’t tell the difference between a rifle and a shotgun.

          • Penny Robinson Fan Club

In other words: “What DIFFERENCE does it make?!?”

This is more a story about “journalists” and their reluctance, in their efforts to promote their hysteria, to even remotely resemble journalists.

  • $35072932

When is the Bull Stream Media going to get back to real reporting instead of pushing the proppressive agenda?

  • Maxx

It’s frankly, embarrassing. The lack of common sense that liberal media show these days in their rush for narrative-driven journalism.

  • DaveTea

I have seen the original in person…and trust me, every woman wants it. I think my wife forgot I promised to build her one now that I think about it…

  • Joe Zepeda

Why is it even news that it was pink? who give a crap about the color. It is a Firearm that is capable of taking and saving a life. The OWNER is at fault, not the gun, not the color.. The owner is the one who screwed up here and are paying for it with a dead body on their hands, probably torturing them forever and looking at jail time more than likely. I fail to see how this is different than a parent leaving strong medication with the ability to overdose out for a kid to get, or something poisonous under the sink or something. This is a stupid mistake by a stupid adult but anyone blaming the gun or the freaking color of the gun is an idiot.

  • Right Wired

I actually picked up an Annihilator-2000 from Serge.

  • Penny Robinson Fan Club

There actually are quite a number of HK weapons out there, and this gentleman at “Hello Kitty Hell” has collected photos of a large number of them, from ARs and AKs, down to purse-sized carry pistols, even HK bullets! Not to mention a tank. The newest entry, the one with its own custom Kitty Kartridges, is actually rather attractive. I saw one before, not sure if it’s on this site, but it was just a small discreet Kitty engraving a bit behind the muzzle, and I thought, I might like that — just so that if I ever have to draw on a bad guy, or God forbid, shoot — that badarse thug wannabe is gonna know he lost to Kitty. BAM!

PS — Now Penny wants to know if we can come back to Earth so she can get a Hello Kitty laser rifle.
