General David Petraeus has resigned his post as CIA Director, citing an extramarital affair.

Yesterday afternoon, I went to the White House and asked the President to be allowed, for personal reasons, to resign from my position as D/CIA.  After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours. This afternoon, the President graciously accepted my resignation.

As I depart Langley, I want you to know that it has been the greatest of privileges to have served with you, the officers of our Nation’s Silent Service, a work force that is truly exceptional in every regard. Indeed, you did extraordinary work on a host of critical missions during my time as director, and I am deeply grateful to you for that.

Teddy Roosevelt once observed that life’s greatest gift is the opportunity to work hard at work worth doing. I will always treasure my opportunity to have done that with you and I will always regret the circumstances that brought that work with you to an end.

Thank you for your extraordinary service to our country, and best wishes for continued success in the important endeavors that lie ahead for our country and our Agency.

With admiration and appreciation,

David H. Petraeus

The White House has issued a statement in response:

Many Twitterers are reacting to the news with shock and disappointment:

General Petraeus was set to testify next week in a closed hearing on Benghazi:

And for some, the timing of the resignation is extremely suspect:

Petraeus will no longer be testifying:

Citizens who have been demanding the truth about Benghazi are furious:

  • digitalPimple

I give 2 shi!z right now about his personal life, we all deserve straight answers on what happened in Ben. He better sequel like a pig and tell what he knows.

    • Tony0920

I wanna know WTH all those friggin ribbons on his chest were for? Underneath, the jacket must have more holes than the Benghazi timeline.

      • my preciousss!!

am hoping he will squeal when he becomes private citizen Petraeus.

  • Marcy Cook

I’m sorry but when I read this I could NOT stop laughing. Every day it is something else. It almost makes me hope that the Mayans were right.

    • Michelle Blackwell

Sorry to disappoint you but the Mayans didn’t have a leap year, the end of the world you seem to be hoping for happened some time in 2010.

      • $266791

Oh darn :( Take our hope away!!

      • Lord Foggybottom

I though you liberals were supposed to be the ones with a sense of humor?

        • yahneverknow

They can’t joke. They’re too busy being “politically correct.” Instead, they fawn over the snarky, spiteful “zingers” from the likes of Bashir and Maher.

Can’t make a funny unless you are insulting someone.

        • Dee Cee

Petraeus-gate, anyone? Has a certain ring.

    • Dee Cee

One can only cringe. Day after election report of drone shot at by the Iranians, now this Petraeus theatre of the absurd.

      • conservativechick

There were SO many more “revelations” in the few days AFTER! Here’s a NEW LOW! Obama administration used our TAX DOLLARS over the last TWO YEARS to advertise on MEXICO TV and radio during soap operas encouraging Mexicans to apply for U.S. food stamps and other benefits!! Obama is known as the FOOD STAMP PRESIDENT OF MEXICO.

  • alumin

I agree with Eisha’s comment above….the alternative of his “resignation” was probably death! This smells to high heaven of BO’s usual methods of cover-up.

    • Dee Cee

What Capitol boiler-room cooked this nonsense?

  • Socal71

Reagan had Oliver North. Looks like the next 4 years are going to be hell for the President.

  • disappearing moderate

Hmmmm. An affair the downfall of an Obama adversary/liability? Sounds kind of familiar.

  • VirginiaGirl

I don’t think it’s b/c of an affair….they’re almost acceptable and expected in Washington these days. I smell something big cooking on Benghazi.

    • Dee Cee

Major gaseous malodor emanating from the bowels of Foggy Bottom.

  • Rob Ramcharan

    Let the purges begin!

  • medicinewomantwo

So this means he can tell the truth , the whole truth next week with no job to lose…….Good!

    • yahneverknow

just hope the mainstream media isn’t able to roast his reputation over the coals in the meantime.

  • Typewriterstreaming

This smells. Please, the standard bearer of the Dems was Ted Kennedy and look what he did to a girl. Something like this suddenly matters to an O admin? Second term, bigger, better bus.

  • VirginiaGirl

Hey! Perhaps the line is moving with the hearings on Benghazi coming! Petraeus today – maybe Obama in a couple weeks! Nah – Gosh – I gotta snap outta these delusions that involve accountability in our administration.

    • Lady 12

Oh, Lord Jesus, make it happen please! Obama resign…

      • Kirk Strieter

Are you kidding? HELL NO!!! I didn’t want him in office either, but if he resigns we’re stuck with Biden!!!!

        • Dee Cee

          Or Hilary MacBeth.

          • Lady 12

            Maybe they’ll all resign.

  • Bui van vat

White House cage match vs. CIA.

Pass the popcorn. This will be fun, even though I’m pretty sure I know who’s going to win.

  • michael s

This has nothing to do with the embassy attack in Benghazi Libya. The man said he was an unfaithful husband and he disgraced himself his wife his country. This string em up mentality for Pres Obama is vile. I’ll say it again, it appears you want black blood. Let all investigations run their course. Let the FBI CIA NSA and all appropriate agencies do their jobs.

    • Bui van vat

You’re all a bunch of racists. Squirrel!

      • michael s

        VOR. Can’t be a racist.

    • ClarkFL

You’re so full of sh*t. This is a work by the admin to cover up for their blatant dishonesty about Benghazi. Can’t believe libs re-elected this bottom-feeding POS Obama.

    • Maria Seeger

I’ll believe the affair when I see it on the National Enquirer. And I’ll believe your moral outrage when you convince me that you weren’t one of those people who shrugged off Bill Clinton’s affair with his intern.

      • michael s

I thought what Clinton did was vile especially on her blue dress. It bothered me how a lot of black people defended him. I got into a lot of arguments. I’ve been talking about people running scared over Valerie Jarrett’s payback time statement. I don’t see it here. I just refuse to believe a CIA Chief can be got to like a common snitch. Let the FBI do their job. I’m only surprised at how quickly we know her name.

  • disappearing moderate

Just heard on Fox, he will NOT testify next week.

    • yahneverknow

Aw… according to the sycophants, that means he WILL testify! Because FoxNews always LIES!!!

  • Tom Ellis

just in time for him not to testify in the Benghazi mess, hmmm what a convenient time for him to decide to resign

  • Michelle Blackwell

Benghazi is a non-issue. It wasn’t an issue for voters and Republicans are just wasting tax payer money looking for something to pin on Democrats.

If no one was held responsible for the massive failings in the Bush administration that lead to 3000 people killed on American soil, 4 people tragically killed in a terrorist attack in a hostile nation will find what?

    • medicinewomantwo

And their family members thank you for reminding them of how shallow Americans are….but you knew that when you labeled anyones death a non-issue.

    • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

Isn’t bin Laden dead now? And wasn’t it Clinton’s job to get bin Laden, but missed? Hmm.

  • Mike Rogers

    Could be classic Barry Blackmail.
Dig for dirt, threaten to blow him sky high if he doesn’t resign over it.
Get the chess pieces off the board.

  • VAMOM2

They just said on Fox that even though he won’t be testifying in public concerning Benghazi, it doesn’t mean that he won’t be talking “behind closed doors”. If that’s the case, I sure hope he has more than a few good men around him at all times. This administration will stop at nothing to remain the most “transparent” in history. What has happened to our dear country?…

    • hazchic

He didn’t run on transparency this time, so, you know, we can’t hold him to that and stuff.

    • Junie3

What makes them think he’s going to give a honest report after all this?

  • Lord Foggybottom

It’s not an affair, it’s a Roman orgy. This government is f*cking everybody!

  • poljunkie♪

With the ridicules sh*t that keeps occuring, maybe we should hope the Mayans projection was right?

    • Steph VT

Calling Michelle Blackwell: Isn’t this where you come in to enlighten poljunkie on the Mayan calendar? (complete sarcasm, poljunkie)

      • poljunkie♪

        Too funny!

  • Streetiebird

    • Maria Seeger

You seriously believe the guy had an affair? Well then I want to know his secret: namely how did he manage to hide it from magazines like the National Enquirer and Globe when John Edwards didn’t?
I’m sure that we’ll be seeing stories next week about how heartbroken his wife is…after all, since he admitted to having an affair publicly, they have no right to expect their privacy to be respected right?
Let me just put it this way: If I don’t see any kind of story about this on National Equirer or any other gossip magazine next week, I’ll call BS.

      • Streetiebird

You seriously believe he was fired over Benghazi? The CIA response was pretty good. Under 23 minutes I believe. No reason to fire him that I’ve seen. Unless you buy into the FOX witch hunt.

        • Maria Seeger

Nope. He wasn’t fired. He was asked to submit his resignation. There’s a difference. Really, it would have been more convincing if details of the affair had been leaked ahead of the game. I could have swallowed that a lot better than this, but the timing is just too convenient for the Obama administration…and finally now we are getting details about who the “other woman” was.
Really, Mr. Obama, you need to fire your current public relations team. Honestly, it wouldn’t have taken that much to leak that information to the National Enquirer. Just use the famous “sources close to the White House”….sheesh.

          • Streetiebird

You mean *he asked* to resign. Easy mistake to make, don’t sweat it.

          • Maria Seeger

Nope. I mean what I said. Just because he publicly said he asked the President for permission to resign doesn’t mean it’s true. I am saying that it was strongly suggested that he submit his resignation. I don’t think it would have been his first choice. BTW, does it occur to anyone that the CIA does its own internal background check before they hire anyone into a sensitive position?
Given that this affair allegedly took place before he became the CIA director, doesn’t it strike anyone as strange that it was the FBI that found this out? Wonder what the FBI was doing investigating Patreaus?

          • yahneverknow

You realize he only asked to resign, admitting to the 1 thing they could scandalize him with, just so that he can tell the whole truth?

            I don’t think you know what’s coming.

          • Streetiebird

Cool conspiracy theory, do you work for infowars?

          • Streetiebird

So you don’t believe the facts of the story because it happened under Obama, got it. That’s what we call Obama derangement syndrome.

  • Timothy Noonan

Some folks will really believe Gen. Petraeus took a fall for Pres. Obama, risking his marriage. He was a great General and leader but that would be a bit much for him to do.

    • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

Ha, ‘risking his marriage’… his wife ‘knows’. And will ‘stoically bear the shame and guilt’… yada yada.

Just remember, your heroine Eva Longoria gets paid to pretend to be something she isn’t.

      • Timothy Noonan

He would not, and no one would ask him to, sully his name and career because of an affair. We should not not judge because of a mistake, he deserves much more than.

      • michael s

Why are you calling Eva Longoria James McCarthy’s heroine. I’m upset after all the touting of her,you give someone else credit .

    • Maria Seeger

Frankly, I find the affair part hard to believe. I mean, look at John Edwards…the tabloids were all over him, but David Patreaus has an affair and not a whisper in a single tabloid? No headline from the National Enquirer or Globe?
Oh well, I suppose I will find the story on the news stand next week.
      Or not.

      • Timothy Noonan

Bloggers mostly, but most media, salivated to take down any Presidential candidate. Gen. Petraeus was beyond reproach and that is why we find it hard believe. He was respected by all and no body would question his fidelity. In time, there will be details publish, some true some false. My respect for does not change, and will still salute him with pride and honor.

    • Dee Cee

Holly Petraeus knows it’s a setup.

  • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

Is he a Democrat? And had an affair, huh..

    • Pete Futz

      Shocking, huh?

      • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

        I know… really.

  • James C. Thomas Jr.

Petraeus could oppose a subpoena (assuming one is even issued) on 2 grounds: 1) the Committee’s investigation isn’t pursuing “a valid legislative purpose”; or 2) self incrimination. 1’s a loser in the courts, and to claim 2 he’d still have to show up and assert his 5th Amendment rights. With the Democrats in control, contempt isn’t going to happen. So, he walks and stays mum.

  • salvagesalvage

AHAHAHAHAH! YES! Obama made him have an affair and then resign, he is that much of a brilliant schemer!

Oh wingnuts, you can always find the stupidest angles.

    • Maria Seeger

Nope. Nobody here believes Obama made him have an affair. I think the bemusement here is that a Democrat official had an affair and people are calling him immoral. Also the timing of his resignation is suspicious.
What I’m finding ironic is that a Democrat President also had an affair a good 10 years ago, and the MSM and his followers were all “It doesn’t matter, they do it in Europe all the time”….but now, everyone is all “Patreaus should be ashamed of himself, how disgusting!”
Frankly, I think he was asked to resign, and came up with the affair so that people wouldn’t tie it into Benghazi. But Obama *made* him do it? Nah, not buying that line.

      • salvagesalvage

        >I think the bemusement here is that a Democrat official had an affair and people are calling him immoral.

As opposed to what? What do they usually call Democrats who have affairs?

        >Also the timing of his resignation is suspicious.

Yes, because that horrible thing in Libya that wingnuts keep on wingnutting about is destroying Obama, he nearly didn’t just get elected.

You understand that right? The only people who think there is any scandal in Benghazi are wingnuts who hate Obama and are desperately trying to find something they can call a scandal and the best they can do is “Obama called a terrorist attack an act of terror! IMPEACH!!!”

At any rate, yes, it’s obviously Obama wanting to clear some house and this made an easy out, there could be a “West Wing” style backroom intrigue around it but nothing to do with Libya.

        >What I’m finding ironic is that a Democrat President also had an affair a good 10 years ago, and the MSM and his followers were all “It doesn’t matter, they do it in Europe all the time”.

Huh? Who in the media ever said anything like that? See this is also very wingnutty, you make these bizarre strawmen up from your bizarre notions of what people believe.

        >…but now, everyone is all “Patreaus should be ashamed of himself, how disgusting!”

Actually a lot of people where already on Patreaus for the whole Iraq thing? You remember that right? Even before the extracurricular banging lots of people were not fans.

        >Frankly, I think he was asked to resign, and came up with the affair so that people wouldn’t tie it into Benghazi.

Yes. That’s right. He humiliated himself and destroy his family to spare Obama the… what? He’s going to testify that Obama didn’t blow up half of Libya and that’s why he’s a traitor?

You do know that he can still testify right? That they don’t kill him or put him on an island like the Prisoner right?

Wingnuts, always waiting for you to start giving thought to what you think.

        • yahneverknow

Why are you being so mean to Detroit Red Wings fans? I know the NHL is on lockout, but geez, have a little heart.

  • Nana Taylor

Congress can compel his testimony through subpeona. Tweet to your congress and tell them to do so.As harsh as Obama admin has been on whistle blowers Im betting Petraeus made sure his buns were covered.

  • TocksNedlog

The third betrayal is his decision to wait until after the election to resign. The fourth betrayal will be when he doesn’t show up to testify.

Did you hear that Gloria Allred is working to track down Petraeus’s mistress to get her side of the story and help her to get some portion of his ‘measly’ military pension? No, that won’t happen. Gloria knows that she is permitted (instructed?) to try to humiliate only those of a conservative persuasion (i.e., Meg Whitman, Mitt Romney). The Obama administration will tolerate no digging anywhere near the Benghazi issue.

Looks like Petraeus is the first domino to fall silently regarding Benghazi.

Expect a few more. Because the waters are muddied. And it is not about
what what said or done. But how the Hearings are perceived!

To the point that whatever hearings there are will be made to look even
more ridiculous, facile and confusing in carefully edited sound bites,
than Issa’s hearing about ‘Fast & Furious’. Due to carefully orchestrated
stonewalling and a record numbers of “Not to my knowledge.”es and
    “I don’t recall.”s.

I really want to understand why the impeached, disbarred, and disgraced Bill Clinton who committed perjury during a Civil Rights trial and who was credibly accused of aggravated rape by Juanita Broadderick — why this man was encouraged to stand his ground, while General Petraeus is shown the door?

It’s almost as if the Democrat party has no moral principles.

    Oh, wait.

  • Constance

Now we shall see what Issa’s committee is made of. They CAN compel him to testify regardless. If they don’t, and they allow somebody else from the CIA to testify instead, then please people…. do not believe in the GOP anymore. Not even Issa. I’m done with these games. I’m just done.

  • GTFOBigGovt

He was out of his league. Everybody knows that between the FBI looking for dirt on the CIA and Obama’s crew, this was a rank amateur error.

WOW WOW WOW, what a matter of convinience, and OBama allowing it….saw it comming, shocked OBama is letting P take the fall

  • Jim Denney

Remember when Petraeus pissed off Coburn & even McCain during the “closed door briefing” by sticking to the video story? I’m betting Axelshaft was holding the FBI report of the affair over General Ps’ head. The Gen. went along before the election because the Congresspussies didn’t put him under oath. Now there were going to be
potential perjury charges if he lied under oath, so the Gen. outed himself to his wife and then resigned rather than betray the CIA and walk the plank himself.

It’s simple really; to figure these guys out just imagine the sleaziest, most despicable thing you can think of, and then follow the bread crumbs to Chez Chicago East (it’s the big

theres been another big update. the fbi had been investigating something and Petraeus’ biographers name came up. they found out he had affair with her. this makes him vulnerable on national security. now when did fbi learn of this? im sure they told wh…and this may have made him vulnerable with benghazi incident.

Wonder if anyone in hollywood will have the stones to turn this whole thing into a movie with a fair portrayal of the events? We all know if this was a republican president they would be hashing out scripts and nabbing the one which contorted the truth the most in order to make him look guilty as hell. I believe obozo is involved in this neck-deep and it is gong to come out inevitably, its just unclear whether there is any impeachable offense to connect to him. If indeed the affair started in Afghanistan he has been damaged goods the whole time as CIA/D. When did the FBI know? When did the NON-president know? Why did he not resign before the election, when it might have made a difference? Why did he resign days before testifying? The American people have been too patient regarding Benghazi. If he really was looking forward to testifying, why not make his resignation effective just after that? Too many questions and no answers — but what’s new about that from the most transparent administration in history? I also wonder if he became expendable and was set up to take the fall for Benghazi — allowing the incompetent commander-in-chief to get off scot free.
