Asinine NY Times columnist Nick Kristof now considers guns weapons of mass destruction, even worse than nuclear bombs or chemical weapons.

This is the type of logic and rhetoric we’ve come to expect from a columnist who refused to apologize for citing bogus abortion statistics and wrote “quite possibly the crappiest NY Times column for Obamacare ever.”

Update: Author/surgeon Atul Gawande seems to have a similar mindset:

  • Just Another Guy

Ignorance is a WMD. Obviously Kristof suffers from ignorance.

    • 5n4k33y35

      Nice one.

  • GTFOBigGovt

@NickKristof These days ordinary birth control is called abortion. Abortion has killed >40 million babies, the most deaths in the history of the universe.

    • Catchance

Actually, closer to 55 Million in the U.S. since Roe v Wade.

  • Cali

The flu virus kills more Americans than guns…

    • Michael Rice

      Maybe we should ban it.

  • Steve_J

So do cars, air plane crashes, knives, baseball bats, fists, etc., etc.. What’s his point ? (rhetorical).

  • EOD

Baseball Bats kill far more Americans than guns do, and, little kids are allowed to just walk around with Baseball Bats, they can carry Baseball Bats concealed in public, and they can walk into a store and buy Baseball Bats at will.

  • Danny Wheeler

Ugh, Kristof, you’re a “weapon of mass stupidity!”

  • Adam Seidner

These people don’t seem to understand what a WMD really is. Liberals take the words literally like they refer to killing machines. They don’t. They refer to those weapons that leave lingering toxic effects on humans and the environment.

    • Infinite_Indeterminism

That’s not quite the definition that is commonly used, although, as far as I know, that they leave toxic residue (‘toxic’ here in a wider meaning) is an inherent side effect of those weapons.

What the general definition of WMD is, is that they are capable of killing thousands (up to, possibly, a few million) people within hours, and for nukes, of destroying similar amounts of structures within a similar timeframe. (Whereas, on the other hand, biological weapons are capable of spreading themselves across a wider area (including as stowaways on jet planes), and chemical weapons usually requiring a MAJOR cleanup operation in order to stop residue from killing more people than the original attack did.)

Obviously, the only way some form of gun would be able to achieve something comparable, would have to be some sort of explosive-grenade artillery being allowed to mow down the population of a very densely populated area. Which sounds slightly unlikely, outside places like Srebrenica or Sarajevo…

  • stuckinIL4now

Just like a finger has to pull the trigger, somebody has to press the button, too. And while he’s at it, could Kristof explain suicide bombers to us.

  • MoxieLouise

OK, here’s a fact for you. In 1994, between April and June, during a space of 100 days, 800,000 Tutsis were hacked to death by machetes (well, actually there were PEOPLE swinging the machetes). Hollywood was well aware of this, but I never heard anything about banning machetes. Just so you know, if you get rid of guns, the human race is capable of committing murder on a grand scale…even with rocks. Face it. Deal with it. Accept it. Then move on.

    • MoxieLouise

Wait, that “accept it and move on” sounded callous. I’m not saying we can’t do anything about it, but it’s a moral internal struggle with each individual, not an outward control issue. Some people choose to be evil, and we can’t change that no matter what we regulate. That’s all I meant.

  • dave9000

Guns are tools, just that, nothing more. Given your logic, which is devoid of any scintilla of common sense, we should ban automobiles, forks ,spoons, knives, sticks, stones and any other article that can be used as a weapon. For God’s sake grow up and get a clue.

  • IBXNJ

the overwhelming majority of gun deaths are SUICIDES. If they took away guns, there would still have people take their live another way.

    • Finrod Felagund

Under liberal logic, we should ban bridges, because many people jump off them to commit suicide.

If they take away guns, then we will still have all these stupid people to contend with. =)

The Oppressive-left would like you to believe that this massacre was caused by inanimate objects and that simply ridding ourselves of the right of self-defense, we can rid ourselves of this supposed menace.

Let’s look at the facts: Firearms have been around for a few hundred years.

Repeating firearms have been in existence for at least 160 years.

These types of arms had been easily available in the early part of the last century – including select-fire, automatic firearms until they were heavily regulated to the point of being banned in the 1930’s

During that time period 160. 100… 80 years ago there weren’t horrific massacres akin to what has happened in contemporary times.

So what HAS changed in the past few years?

It hasn’t been the availability of guns – that has gone down in recent times as compared to the past.

Guns are inanimate objects that have been more readily available in the past than now – so you can’t use the cop-out of blaming them.

There has to be a different reason – a reason the Left doesn’t want to talk about in their headlong rush to deprive the innocent of their means of self-defense.

The Left won’t want to talk about it because it points to their culpability in these massacres.

    • JustLikeAnimals

It is the manifestation, in nearly every sense, of the liberal ideology of “do what you want.” The left is quite conflicted in their politics and philosophies of freedom these days.

  • JackThomasAZ

Liberal fascism has killed more people than guns.

Conn. has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the nation and it didn’t stop this horrible tragedy. Disarming law abiding citizens because of the bad actions of other is akin to outlawing drinking because some drink, drive, and kill people, or outlawing the cars they use. This nation learned decades ago that prohibition of any kind is a non-starter. Taking my Glock only emboldens the criminal who is now confident that I have nothing to defend myself and my family against his armed assault on our lives and property, because you can be certain the criminal is going to have a gun whether it’s legal or not.

  • TocksNedlog

Remember the good old days, when “nuclear, chemical or biological weapons” killed MORE Americans than guns?
    Yeah, me neither.

  • Frustrated Teacher

What we need is better school security. I teach and there is very little that will stop someone from doing this on any campus in my state if they really want to. We have ONE deputy who is stretched pretty thin on our large campus…oh and his automatic weapon is locked in the trunk of his car. I also read today that the O administration has cut funding for school security programs the past 2 years to ‘save money’. Welcome to the law of unintended consequences. While I am waiting for ANYONE in Wash to admit this and take responsibility [crickets], I will note that when you find out the FACTS about guns and the results of gun laws, all of the liberal rhetoric fall apart. http://www.gunfacts.org

    • JustLikeAnimals

Agree. A semi-automatic pistol of 9mm or .40 cal variety in the trained hands of one of those adults would have ended this massacre before it got started. Two quick taps to the OC cavity (which anyone can learn to do) and those kids would be warm in their beds tonight.

I was a high school teacher for eight years and I share your frustration.

Here’s an offer for free training for any school district that wants to arm staff at schools……

There is NO way the politically correct schools will take advantage of this even though all the evidence would indicate this as a reasonable solution. Instead they will scream about how it is INSANE MADNESS TO PUT MORE GUNS IN SCHOOLS!!! As a teacher who would put their life on the line for their students I get really offended by the idiots who insinuate that I would shoot a kid when angered if given access to a gun at school. OH and for the other idiots who say kids would get a hold of a gun, it is VERY easy to secure weapons from students using a tiny bit of brain power. There are even ways to monitor them from the office and alert if one is removed. So many stupid arguments all by people who hate ALL guns.
