C’mon! We’re doin’ just fine! Obama said the “economy is poised to take off” and now the unemployment rate has edged down to 7.7 percent and nonfarm payroll employment increased by 146,000 in November, according to this morning’s Bureau of Labor Statistics report.

Forward! And pay no attention to the shrinking workforce. It’s the liberal way!

Joe Scarborough thinks the report is awesome sauce.

Because, really, what could be more awesome than job-seekers just giving up?

Miseducating? As always, Jim Pethokoukis provides some sobering perspective.

More perspective:

Conservatives helpfully nutshell the liberal reaction:

What will President Obama have to say about today’s labor numbers? And a better question from Jonah Goldberg: Will anyone ask?

Update:

Jim Pethokoukis drills down deeper into the “new normal” at the AEI blog.

Read the whole thing.

  • Mike Horve

I don’t believe anything that Comes out of Washington. Number manipulation can make employment numbers look as good as they want.

  • Iam

don’t they always hire more during the holiday seasons? .. just asking

  • digitalPimple

This stuff is too complicated for a ‘normal’ to digest and care about. As long as the number decreases, that’s all the Obama people will promote. That’s life.

For those who understand this stuff, these truly are some scary stats. Not good. Not good at all.

But then again, I’m just a racist.

  • BeyondPolls

Conservatives can no longer run on economic issues with the game rigged like this. It’s time to run logically on social issues and to train our candidates how to talk about social issues properly. This will bring out the Republican Party’s largest voting block, who is also frustrated right now: the evangelicals.
Evangelical+Catholic turnout dropped 3% from 2008 levels, which were already lower than 2004. Why? Because the conservatives have allowed the liberals to demagogue them on social issues.
Ken Cuccinelli is where the new social issues Republican Party begins. A huge pro-life bill has also been introduced and passed in the Michigan house.

    • http://twitter.com/commonsenseobse commonsenseobserver

Uh, what, abandoning the foremost political issue of our times? Really?

      • BeyondPolls

Did it help Romney get elected? If the economy is number one, he should have won a landslide.

        • Vennoye

If you have not, start lurking on leftist site comment boards. It doesn’t matter whether the issues are social or economic. If they come from Republicans…they are wrong. Republicans are crazy…they do not and cannot have any good ideas. MSM and education has brainwashed this into them for 12 years or longer. We might have a different climate after 2 years of Obama, but don’t count on it. Democrats think they have things wrapped up for the next 12 years or so on class warfare. That is their new strategy–it certainly paid off in the 2012 election.

          • BeyondPolls

I lurk frequently on such sites, but it does not really matter what they think. We have the power to re-engage the evangelicals where they are not. That was the true genius of Ronald Reagan: he brought the evangelicals to the GOP in a time when they were disillusioned by Jimmy Carter, whom many of them voted for the first time around since he claimed to be a Southern Baptist.
The Left has won the culture war, so what are we going to do about it? Nearly half of all evangelicals are not registered to vote, so we can start there. Then we can find the lost 2004 evangelicals who apparently have not voted for the past eight years except for maybe the 2010 midterms.
This brings me to my original point: how do we get the evangelicals back? Run on social issues the way Ronald Reagan did. We must properly train our candidates to take far right stances on social issues without being Todd Akin.
Mark my words: engaging the evangelicals through social issues will win the culture war.

        • $36544368

Uh yeah…if some liberals understood exactly what an economy is…they just want their handouts to continue. It doesn’t matter whether or not unemployment is up or down to them…it’s all about ‘me, me, me’. When you read tweets during the last weeks of the campaign saying that Romney was going to take away their food stamps, that’s all it took…economy to some is whether or not you have enough food stamps so that you can use your cash to buy the next piece of ghetto-fab bling!

          • BeyondPolls

You just explained why we can no longer run on the economy. You can’t beat Santa Claus so we have to go hard to the right on social issues without being Todd Akin. This will turn out disenfranchised evangelicals, which was the true genius of Reagan. Obama ran on social issues and won.

  • Seewetoldu

Part of their strategy is to make people think the economy is getting better. Because if they put out the real numbers they think it would kill any proclaimed positive momentum . So its the Obama illusion that hes really doing a good job. And blame the entire countrys economy on the hurricane. The delusional Obama lovers are buying his BS. Informed Conservatives know better.

    Two words: seasonal jobs.

Last year, between the months of October and December, saw a gain of 660,200 seasonal employees. And it’s predicted that seasonal jobs would increase to almost 700,000 this year. So why don’t we wait until 2013 to see how many of those jobs are actually not temporary?

    • TomJB

Radio said the 7.7% was seasonally adjusted to 8.2% (IIRC) Won’t see that on CNNBCBSLSDABC

The U6, rate which is a more accurate reading of the real situation, is at 14.4% and I’m thinking even that is a bit low.

    • therantinggeek

I was about to ask what the U-6 number was. I suppose I’ll have to run a month-to-month analysis of the CBO’s numbers this weekend at some point.

I see David Corn is under the delusion that there still is a “Romney campaign” going on. I guess Obama being in perpetual campaign mode has rubbed off on him.

    • http://twitter.com/thetugboatphil TugboatPhil

Good catch. Corn is only mouthing what he hears from his White House handlers.

    • lillymckim

Corns obsessed with Romney! Corn’s (former?) employer (?)
“The Daily Beast” expected to lose $40 MILLION DOLLARS this year and has begun the LAYOFFS spin that employment number David Corn!
You might want to ask them how well they are doing this year?

@Teresakopec is right, this *is* why Obama won. Lazy, ignorant, or just plain stupid people willing to believe and vote on what they are spoon fed simplified and spun on a bumper sticker or 140 words or less. Thinking is so hard!

    U-6 Unemployment:

It’s Obama’s fault that the recovery is not happening fast enough! If only we gave the rich another tax cut then these poor people would have more money! It’s simple Reaganomics!

    • detroit19

Quit calling it a tax cut-there is NO tax cut on the table. It’s called leaving the current rates in place.

      • Streetiebird

Except for when your guy ran on a proposed 20% tax cut across the board, right?

Food prices have risen over 40%. Gas prices have doubled since 3 years ago to over $4.30 a gallon. Energy costs per kilowatt hour have doubled. Heating oil doubled.

Health insurance premiums have gone up 17% and in addition to co-pays and deductibles increasing.

Taxmageddon coming for small business and the middle class.
No growth. Increase in spending. No cuts in spending.

So THIS is the new Obama normal? So THIS is WHAT people voted for?

So NOW the Democrats are complacent with the “New Normal” since its under a Democratic President Obama?

7.7% unemployment under Obama is GOOD and under Bush would have been a treasonous offense and it would also be the LEAD story EVERY NIGHT on the state run networks NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, MSNBC.

The New Normal? The seasonal jobs like playing Santa Claus is a good job for Obama…

  • BeeKaaay

More proof that leftwingwackos love it when people suffer. They’re cruel and horrible.

  • emjem24

Unemployment is still unemployment no matter how much you cover it up with manipulated “jobs” numbers and statistics. You can make up sh!t with numbers any day of the week but it still doesn’t make it true. I should know since I’ve been out of work for over a year now and don’t see much improvement. I guess I’m just hallucinating my own job reality, aren’t I?

  • rant stocks

I worked the whole 8 years of bushs term, the last year of his term went south an he tryed to stimulate the economy with a check to all americans with a S.S. number.I got mine did you? does he not get credit for that? Obama sent 787billion to rich people.

  • http://www.righthook38.com righthook38

At what point do they figure out the “falling” unemployment rate is not the actual indicator of unemployment? Little to no jobs every month, yet unemployment is going down? How stupid are these people? The phrase “dumbing down of Americans” is a huge understatement.
