Paul Ryan backs staunch conservative Tom Price for GOP Conference chair

In a letter to fellow lawmakers, Rep. Paul Ryan has endorsed Georgia Rep. Tom Price to be the next chairman of the Republican Conference.

Ryan emphasized the need to have “proven leaders at the helm of our policy and communication strategies.”

I have had the privilege of working with Congressman Price on a myriad of different issues over the years, and I know he is uniquely qualified for the job of Conference Chairman. He was instrumental in drafting our House Republican budget. His vocal leadership on issues like health care, tax reform, and fiscal matters has been vital to our messaging and policy efforts.

No one will work harder than Congressman Price at building a strong and compelling communications and policy strategy that reflects the will of our membership and the needs of the nation.

Price is running against Boehner’s pick, GOP Conference vice chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers.

On “Fox News Sunday,” Price said “no” when asked if he agreed with Speaker Boehner that Obamacare was here to stay.

“I can tell you, as a physician, we’re not opposed to the president’s health care law because of this election. We’re opposed because it’s bad policy and it’s bad for patients all across this land,” Price said.

Boehner recently said “the election changes that” when asked if he will continue efforts to repeal the law. “Obamacare is the law of the land,” he said.
