Here’s the latest on Jumana Nagarwala, the Detroit-area doctor arrested and charged with performing genital mutilations on two young girls between the ages of 6 and 8. According to Nagarwala, it was mutilation — it was “religious removal”:

The defense argued, claiming no female genital mutilation took place, instead, a religious removal of a mucus membrane from the genitals which was wrapped up and given to the parents to bury — a practice they say is performed by a small sect of Indian-based Islam called Dawoodi Bohra.
The judge didn’t buy it, however and is keeping her in custody as a flight risk:
