Buzzfeed’s been heavily criticized for their hit piece on HGTV “Fixer Upper” hosts Chip and Joanna Gaines. Ben Smith, the editor of Buzzfeed, offered up a weak defense for the article about the gay marriage views of the Gaines’ pastor.
@HotlineJosh Not to argue w your reporting – I agree – but reporting on very public figures is not "shaming"

In light of Buzzfeed’s interest in reporting on the gay marriage views of the church leaders of “public figures,” they’ve been given a big lead:
Dear @BuzzFeed, we have a HUGE story for you: @keithellison's Imam said homosexuality is ‘not what God intended’

Hot tip about the U.S. congressman and possible next head of the DNC!

The article’s written by Jim Geraghty, who also provided running commentary on Twitter:
Hey, @BuzzFeed, I found another outrageous quote: “[Homosexuality] is not recognized as being what God intended.”https://t.co/t0PS5jOBqa

Another outrageous anti-gay quote: “This is not a lifestyle, or life choice, that is recognized as legitimate.”

Oh, wait, these aren’t from the pastor of HGTV hosts, this is the imam of Rep. Keith Ellison, DNC chair candidate. https://t.co/t0PS5jOBqa

You’re gonna do a lengthy expose on Imam Makram El-Amin, right, @BuzzFeed? @BuzzFeedBen? https://t.co/t0PS5jOBqa pic.twitter.com/4yPcbvsvae

I mean, if we need a big national conversation about the pastor of HGTV hosts, why not a lawmaker’s imam? https://t.co/t0PS5jOBqa pic.twitter.com/3R7XkBT1Aq

Move the goalposts! Can Ellison be DNC Chair without denouncing his imam’s view gays aren’t natural or legitimate? https://t.co/t0PS5jOBqa

OK, Buzzfeed, do your stuff! #Crickets
