FBI looking into Hillary Clinton's 'unusual' private email setup, including tech firm that helped manage it

There was an ugly fight between the Hillary Clinton camp and the New York Times recently, after the Times ran a front-page story on two federal inspectors general requesting a criminal investigation into the former secretary of state’s use of a personal email server.

The Times eventually backed down: “Much later, The Times backed off the startling characterization of a ‘criminal inquiry,’ instead calling it something far tamer sounding: it was a ‘security’ referral,” explained public editor Margaret Sullivan. (“Startling characterization”? Yeah, right.)

Now that that ugly mess is behind her, Clinton can look forward to a real FBI investigation. The Washington Post reports Tuesday night that the FBI is looking into the security of Clinton’s private email server.

Clinton’s lawyer says that she is “actively cooperating” with the investigation. When has she not?

The Washington Post reports:

The FBI has begun looking into the security of Hillary Rodham Clinton’s private e-mail setup, contacting in the past week a Denver-based technology firm that helped manage the unusual system, according to two government officials.

Also last week, the FBI contacted Clinton’s lawyer, David Kendall, with questions about the security of a thumb drive in his possession that contains copies of work e-mails Clinton sent during her time as secretary of state.

The FBI’s interest in Clinton’s e-mail system comes after the intelligence community’s inspector general referred the issue to the Justice Department in July. Intelligence officials expressed concern that some sensitive information was not in the government’s possession and could be “compromised.” The referral did not accuse Clinton of any wrongdoing, and the two officials said Tuesday that the FBI was not targeting her.

The New York Times likely is still embarrassed about its use of the word “criminal” in association with Clinton, but this should work on page A1 tomorrow:
