Amb. Susan Rice speaks at last: 'I relied solely and squarely' on US intelligence when blaming video

It’s been more than two months since U.N. Amb. Susan Rice appeared on five different network news programs to discuss the “spontaneous protests” which led to the deaths of Amb. Chris Stevens and three others in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11. Appearing today at the Security Council media stakeout, Rice took a question from a reporter on the “blame the video” story.

Asked about the controversy over her TV appearances, Rice said, in part, “I relied solely and squarely on the information provided to me by the intelligence community. I made clear that the information was preliminary and that our investigations would give us the definitive answers. Everyone, particularly the intelligence community, has worked in good faith to provide the best assessment based on the information available.”

The reporter also asked Rice, “Is Senator [John] McCain fair in what he has said?” Rice replied that she has “great respect” for McCain, but that “some of the statements he’s made about me have been unfounded, but I look forward to having the opportunity at the appropriate time to discuss all of this with him.”

Rice has finally spoken up for herself, but apparently the timing was right. Buzz is building that Rice might be in line to be the next Secretary of State, and her supporters have managed to demonize McCain as a racist and misogynist for “bullying” her in his quest for answers.

With Rice finally willing to address questions about Libya, can we add a couple more?
